The shot is interesting, Ziggy...for me that is...and I am interested in what he does and how he do it...works for me...
This photo reminds me of what a lot of my flash pictures look like.
The flash is adding the required light to make a good exposure, but it is killing the natural light and the mood it lends to the subject, IMO. I can imagine that it is a lot darker in that room than the picture would lead you to believe.
Am I right?

I'd like to lose that small window at the left hand edge as it pulls the eye over there.
A great scene. I, of course, would like to turn it into a B & W.

Jim - let me be the dissenter here. While I like the overall setting and see what you are trying to do, I find the scene a bit too busy and definitely over-processed. I find the B&W does not work at all as while you have lost some of the colours, the complexity remains.
While I don't really love what I've done here, I'd be tempted to move in this direction:
I find the image is about the blacksmith and not as much with where he is working.
