Datacolor Spydercheckr24 vs SpyderCube.

I need a white/black/grey reference and am debating whether to get a DATACOLOR Spydercheckr24 or a SpyderCube. I am leaning towards the SpyderCube at the moment but would appreciate recommendations from people who have used either one of those two devices. I don't anticipate ever generating custom profiles for my camera.

Andre, I have both the SpyderCube and the SpyderChekr.

If you only want to calibrate your white balance, then the SpyderCube is perfectly adequate. (Though I tend to look into each shot to set a grey point that suits my concept for the image.)

The SpyderCheckr gives you the opportunity of adjusting the 'natural' colour bias associated with your camera.

I use it at the start of a capture session and then apply the 'profile' to all the images in that shoot.

I save profiles for specific lighting situations. As an example, in my case, I store profiles generated for dull cloudy , Cloudy Bright, Cloudy Sunny, Sunny, Evening light etc. It has been particularly useful on occasion when I've been engaged in night photography.

I tend to regenerate them fairly regularly as part of my initial processing workflow....

I do not always shoot with the Chekr card, ... I tend to do so when I'm not sure of the light, since it enables me to apply a level of pre-process adjustment that might otherwise be difficult to compensate for further down the workflow.

Of the two, I use the Chekr much more.

One final point, the effect of the adjustment profile is very easy to see when applied to the 'raw' capture but does not drastically change the captured image. I would also suggest that it most effective when used to adjust raw captures. (I can't see the point of using it for camera generated JPG but I'm sure other forum members may have other opinions in respect of JPG captures.)

Andre - I have a number of different reference cards; some came with photography books, I have the x-Rite ColorChecker Pro as well as a larger gray target by Lastolite and a small WhiteBal card.

I only use the ColorChecker to develop camera profiles. I use a gray / white card for studio work or portraiture. They are pretty useless for any landscape work or mixed light photography.

I am mostly looking at calibrating my white balance when shooting indoors. It looks like the SpyderCube will do nicely.
