    Hiking Photos - Christmas Eve

We've had lots of rain and record breaking temperatures. The rain let up for a little on Christmas Eve and I had the urge to burn some calories and take some photos.

This hike was to a place in the Blue Ridge Mountains named Spy Rock. It provides a great overlook (when it is not cloudy) into the Shenandoah Valley and was used for this purpose during the civil war in mid 1860s.

As you can see, high and low altitude clouds, were abundant. The wind was fairly brisk. Shots were taken without a tripod.

I was surprised to become aware of the amount of color there in December. Hope you like them. C&C welcome.

The black and white is very effective and dramatic.

Would it be possible to pull a little more detail from the highlights in the clouds?

I love the coloured ones, Sam...the black and white almost lost the essence for me...

Very nice; in the first, if you got a still higher platform, it would have worked even better .... I also wanted to see the color of the second image; third is also very nice....

Thanks for your suggestion Trevor. I tried to put a little more definition into the clouds in the edit below.

Thanks Nandakumar. You are right, if I could only get a tall step ladder up the mountain I could get a better perspective.

Thank you so much. I must have edited a dozen versions trying to get the most out of it without too much noise, haze and over exposure areas.

Hi Izzie - Well I'm tempted to bring a ladder up the mountain but being never satisfied, I suspect I'll then wish I had a taller ladder.
