great insect, good shots
Wonderful photo of a very strange creature. If it was April 1st I would be suspecting you created it in photoshop using a shrimp as a starting point.
wonderfully bizarre. But you are right I wouldn't want to come across it in my garden ! Thanks
I though it was under water... i just wonder how many different types of life forms are around us!!! what we have seen so far, only a minor fraction of the total ......
Nice shot. Looks like it has some lobster in it
Wow - yeah, having taken plenty of underwater shots, I would have sworn this was a reef critter of some sort - even the substrate looks like sand. Do you have any other shots of these things? I'd love to learn what they are.

Never seen anything even close to these.....what size are they?
Dave
Google "troll haired insect" - but oddly, all those articles look like they come out of South America and are rare... odd that you found them in your garden in Australia.

Very strange critter indeed , thanks for sharing
If you look here you can see that your image does have a strong resemblance to these planthoppers from Suriname. It appears that there is some trade between Aus. and Suriname so there exists the possibility that these insects could have hitchhiked their way to Aus.
I would suggest trying to capture one/them and contact an Entomologist. Information on these bugs is scarce so a specimen-in-hand could be desirable.
Thanks for the link, obviously a close cousin!
I've sent the photo off to a few sources for ID, the local paper is going to publish a photo of it this week - hopefully the entomologists on the Island will recognise it.
It was my day for finding bugs yesterday (I went for a bush-walk) - I woke up this morning with a pain from my belly-button down to my left knee. A paralysis tick had burrowed so deep I couldn't get it out and had to go to the Doc. At least it didn't go for the squirrel hold!
Mystery solved!
It's a Green Planthopper nymph (Siphanta Acuta).
