    Marlow Winter Sunset

One of the first images made this year shows Marlow Bridge and All Saints Church basking in late afternoon sunshine.

Nice shot , Chris. Did you leave the bright light on the right deliberately? I do find it distracting, it can draw the eye away.

    Thanks for your comments Guys.

Dave - I thought long and hard about the suns reflection in the window of the riverside house and came to the conclusion that this is what the sun does so I kept it. However for print purposes I may well take it put. Does anyone else have an opinion?

I think the reflected sun in that window gives something of interest on that side of frame - otherwise, what's over there, in shadow, doesn't contribute much and could arguably be cropped off, but I think that amount that side has to be there due to the nature of the image (the bridge). I find from there, my eye goes down to the boats on the river and left to the bridge, then over it to the left hand side of frame.

You had some nice clouds to pick up the low angle light too.

    Just to clarify Chris,

    I wasn't actually suggesting cropping

I followed it up with reasons not to.

Wonderful light and colours, Chris, and great reflections of the sunlight - left and right, and from the clouds.

    Cheers.

Was that an airplane in the distant with those clouds? I'd remove that no matter what to leave the clouds as they are -- clouds, which actually, very nice . Love those reflections too...all in all a beautiful scene. Good job!

    A very nice shot Chris.

The one thing that strikes me is that super bright reflection off the window on the right hand side of the image. I find it rather distracting (my eyes keep darting over to it). As Dave has already suggested, I don't think you would want to totally eliminate it as it adds some brightness to an areas of the image that is largely in shadow. Toning it down would be worth looking at, though.

I see a sea gull Izzie, not a plane, but then I might not be looking at the same thing you are (I'm looking above the church, to right of steeple).

Marlow is not so far from Heathrow, so there could be one there somewhere.

Dave -- I thought it was a bird too but there is light at the front...of the bird (airplanes are also referred to as "bird").

    OK, I'll play

I have had another scrutinise of the sky, but I cannot see anything with a 'light at the front'.

    Are you looking at this?

    Marlow Winter Sunset

Which I see as a (white bodied, darker winged) gull heading toward the camera, with the sun illuminating its head and chest areas.

Gulls are very common here in winter months (they go to coastal areas in summer).

The planes, or 'birds', that use Heathrow are mostly 'low wing' so it isn't one of them, it might be a 'high wing' GA type heading to/from White Waltham, but I really do think this is a gull.

Although - the more I study it - the more I can understand how you might see it as a Cessna or similar - even I'm doubting myself now - what have you done woman? I thought I knew what reality was, now you're messin' with my head!!!!

Hopefully Chris can settle the discussion with reference to the larger original, or his memory.

    Cheers, Dave

Sorry Dave...The image wasn't 1600 to start with. And yes, we are looking at the same 'bird' though I doubt a bird will have frontal lighting.

I think it is just a gull and the tiny size of its white, sunlit area of head+chest has possibly been 'enhanced' by the sharpening, causing it to brighten up enough to be considered a light source.
