My name is Kevin Hoag, and I'm an engineer, educator, father of three daughters, grandfather of six amazing little people. I live in South Texas, USA, and have a non-competitive passion for photography (no contests, no paid photography jobs). My favorte shooting can only be described as a potpourri. Hello, From near Cambridge UK - a septuagenarian, who as the assumed moniker suggests loves the English countryside, walks every day and lately has taken a camera with him. I hope to be able to learn here how to take better images - no wish to become totally professional - just to learn. Best wishes to all, David.

Hi there, My name is Terry. I've been a portrait pro want'a be for years but don't have a clue and little time. I love taking photos and editing them. I guess its a hobby for which I wish I could excel in. Nothing like getting paid to do something you love. I dream of having my own studio, although outside photography is my favorit. I guess I want my own business. I use a Canon 5D Mark IV but don't know how to use it. I stink at reading the manual and directions.

Welcome Terry.
Luckily these days there is an unlimited amount of free information and tutorials on the web so learning an aspect of photography (or any hobby) is a lot easier than in previous decades.
However that does not mean you don't have to put effort in yourself. My suggestion is first you understand the technical basics about photography...things like exposure and focus. There are plenty of these on this site alone.
Next , you need to understand how your camera works, so you can achieve the desired results in the tutorials. There is no short cut for this. You can try youtube if you don't like reading a manual.
Then there is Post Processing techniques.
Finally. put it all into practice so you can set out to take specific images with specific attributes. Only then will you be able to decide if portrait or perhaps landscape or street photography is for you.

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here
Hi. I've just joined the group, looking for a way to continue to improve my photography skills. (I hope I'm posting this in the right place!) My interest in photography began in retirement and I'm gradually building up my equipment. I am an Olympus user, choosing a mirrorless camera in order to facilitate two of my interests: travel, bushwalking/hiking. I am a member of Flickr and this should be the link if you are interested https://www.flickr.com/photos/145971609@N04/....if it doesn't work, feel free to contact me My photography goal for the year is to work through a list of skills that I would like to develop, using sites such as this.

Hi everyone - my name is Kat and I’m from the UK. I’m more of a happy snapper than a photographer. I like landscapes and wildlife; although I’m not the best at focussing for the former and don’t have enough patience for the latter so lots to learn!!!
Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here
A very warm welcome to the 6 people who have joined the forum so far today. Great to have you all here. I see that there is great variety of photographic knowledge and skills amongst you. I hope that those who want more knowledge will feel able to ask questions and those who can help, do. As we have said on here many times, the only silly question is the one that you do not ask. If you need to know something and can't find the answer anywhere else, please do come in with a question. And if you want to subject your images to C & C, post them up, again stating what it is you want people to comment upon.

Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here
Am not at all sure where I am! I find it very confusing. All I want is to enrol as a new member. Help! Please!
Re: NEW MEMBER? Please Introduce Yourself Here
Maybe I got it right!! So pleased at last to be part of this exciting adventure. My interests are abstract of all kinds, some coastal work as the sea is on my doorstep, watching the expressions on the face of anyone who looks at what I have taken even if he or she doesn't understand what I am trying to say. And the conversation we have about it.
