Welcome all.
Good Day I am David Schoen From San Antonio Texas in the USA. I work for one of the worlds largest banks as a Global ID Administrator. I am part of 3 teams (Database/UNIX/CyberArk) with my main focus on granting, modifying and removing access to our databases around the world.
Growing up my dad has an Olympus Six camera he would use from time to time. I believe he may have purchased it during the time he was in Korea. We were not that well off so spending money on film and having it processed was not a priority. I was always wanting to use the camera. When I was allowed it would only be for a shot or two. I do not recall how old I was when I received a developing kit for Christmas. Once the kit chemicals were gone processing stopped.
In my late 20's (which was in late 1980's) I enrolled in several photography classes at the local college. My passion was reignited. I spent quite a number of hours in the school dark room processing black and white prints. I still have those prints (buried away in storage - need to get them out - I am certain I scanned the pics before placing in storage but what hard drive are they on). The cameras I was using were Canon EOS 620 and EOS 650 for different speeds of B&W film. I had 3 lenses all Canon - 50 f1.8, 35-70 f3.5-4.5 and 70 - 210 f4. I did not have a dark room other than at school so after I left the college processing quickly became very expensive plus no control over how they were being printed (burning and dodging) so I cut back on picture taking.
I purchased quite a number of inexpensive digital cameras over the next few years. That was until Canon introduced their 80D. A few months later I owned one. I have been very impressed with what I can do with this camera and the kit lens. I have tried my older 35 mm lens but found they do not focus as fast and are nosier in the focusing process. End of last year I purchased the Sigma 70 - 200 f2.8 Sport lens. Love the lens but have not had time to use it as often as I like. I am now awaiting the arrival of a Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG OS HSM IF ART Lens I ordered Sunday evening.
I love to learn new things. I have numerous interests including all aspects of photography. I find myself drawn to shooting nature and animals quite often. This past year I decided I want to make a business of my photography (even though I have never changed anyone for my services - yet). I look forward to learning new things from everyone on here
Welcome aboard...
Welcome to CiC and good luck with your professional intentions...
BTW: My maternal grandfather's name was Schoen. He came from Kassel in Germany in the 1870's and lived in New York City...
However, my father's side of the family came from the San Antonio area. The family originally settled in San Patricio County on a Mexican Land Grant in the early 1830's...
I’m not sure if I’m adding my name to the Welcome thread. I have been posting on forums like this for over 25 years but despite having tried to read up on rules and requirements I am thoroughly confused. One post says images should not be more than 700px on the longest side. In another place it talks about sizes not more than 1500 px. I also have a query about accessing my images online. All my photos for export are accessible on the web via my Amazon Photos account. Will that work here?
OK, so having established Im posting to the right page, here’s a bit about me. I used to teach Photoshop and when I retired in 2014, I took up photography to give myself something to work on so as to maintain my photoshop skills. I love taking photos of flowers up close. I also love street photography. I live in Kent, an hour from central London on the train. I try to get to London at least once a week. I recently had a day’s tuition with a lovely pro called Mark Fearnley. I do not have a website. I post to two FB Street forums and to Instagram.
Hi Richard if I correctly recall we have Crowe relatives. My grandmother was a Carvatt. My dad said there were Carvatt relatives in California that he visited with before going to Korea. I believe my relatives fled Germany from the Pozen region (now Poland). Most settled near Round Rock Texas which is outside of Austin Texas. I have not seen any link to the Schoens in NY. I have taken several DNA tests but have not looked at the sites in a year (too busy).
What a small world. I have relatives in Georgetown (just North of Round Rock, Texas) as well as relatives in Austin (just South of Round Rock). My wife lived in Round Rock while she was attending the University of Texas in Austin for her Master's Degree in Nursing Education...
Looking back at my Legacy genealogy files, my grandfather's surname was originally Schon (with the double dot umlaut over the "o") and his name was arbitrarily changed to the "Schoen" spelling when he passed through U.S. Immigration in the 1880's...
Hi...I have enjoyed playing with photography for over thirty years but never professionally. I loved converting from film to digital and digital editing in Lightroom and Photoshop are amongst my favourite things to do. I live in Eumundi, on the Sunshine Coast in South-East Queensland and teach in one of the local high schools where I am lucky enough to teach photography as one of my subjects.
This is an awesome website and valuable teaching tool. I'm looking forward to getting involved and hopefully bring some of my students in with me.
Cheers,
Marc
Hi Marc, and a warm welcome to CiC. I hope that you've not been badly affected by the fires.
As I expect you have realised, this is a place for mutual learning, so great to have you on board and if you can persuade some of your students along even better! I hope you'll be sharing some of your images too.
Best regards, Dave
Hi Dave...thanks for the warm welcome and good wishes.
Whilst fires came close to our local community, we have remained largely unharmed. We are devastated by the loss of homes and properties of so many of our southern friends, not to mention the huge impact to the Australian animals and their habitats.
I am looking forward to being part of this group and hopefully finding a way to contribute.
Cheers,
Marc

A warm welcome to our community.
I'm going to widen your question a bit, and say you are planning to buy buy an Interchangeable Lens Camera (ILC).That is because as well as traditional dslr's there are many ranges of mirrorless cameras from various manufacturers which will do the job too. All modern cameras will take excellent images, the more expensive ones have more facilities, but don't necessarily create better images.
It's difficult to recommend a particular camera, because a lot depends on personal preferences. Ideally I would go to a camera shop and try, but I don't know if that is possible in Syria right now.
However, the good news is that what you are planning to shoot is not too demanding of a camera and lens (it would be different if you were shooting wildlife for example). So I suggest that any camera from one of the main manufacturers together with their "kit" lens will be good for you. Since you mention portraits and food, if at all possible I would recommend you save enough from your budget to buy a tripod, which will make it much easier to make good pictures.
I suggest that you try and produce a shortlist of three or four cameras, and ask again. This time though I please post in the Digital Cameras and Equipment forum, which has a lot more readers than this New Members one.
Best regards, Dave
I agree with the advice Dave gave you. The basic beginner's cameras from the major manufacturers are now very good. For example, the cheapest Canon "rebel" DSLRs have sensors that are better than those on the first two digital cameras I owned.
I agree that it would be good to post a note on the Digital Equipment forum once you have a few that interest you. People can then let you know about details that might influence your choice.
