Jerry - Great to have you here. I hope that, now you are part of the forum, that the value of the site as a source of learning, increases for you. There are lots of experienced photographers on here who are very willing to share that experience and their knowledge so that we can all learn from them.

Hello all. My name is Tana Reiff. I live in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, which is best known as the oldest Amish settlement in the US. I am not Amish (far from it) and live a regular suburban life; however, eight years ago I started taking pictures of the quaint signs around the countryside. Last year I was fortunate enough to land a book contract with Schiffer Publishing. My book of 240 photographs and accompanying anecdotes, with the working title of Signs of Lancaster County: A Photographic Tour of Amish Country, is scheduled for release in the spring of 2015. It is in the editorial queue now. This has been such a fun project! Along the way, and continuing now, I've been taking many more pictures, mostly focusing on the texture, shape, and rhythm of things I see in the Amish farmlands here. I use a Nikon D5200 but many of my earlier signs photos were taken with Canon and Fujifilm compact cameras, which can do a remarkable job if you provide good light and composition. I am enjoying the tutorials and forum here on Cambridge in Colour, always learning a lot!

Intro... Well, I'm Rachel. I am a Veterinary Technician at a Specialty and Emergency Veterinary Hospital. I have been taking pictures for the past 20(+) years. I follow several photographers' blogs but am looking for more interaction as my family is probably tired of hearing about photography as a whole. I live in Columbia, South Carolina with my husband and have several animals and a 5.5 year old daughter. I found this forum though a post on Flickr and am excited to learn more. I grew up shooting with a Minolta, my first DSLR was a Konica Minolta Maxxum 7D and I currently am shooting with a Sony A55.
thanks ~ Rachel

Great to have you here. Thanks for joining. I hope you continue to find CiC useful and enjoyable. There are lots of people on here very willing to hare ideas, knowledge and experience. It's that sort of forum.
By the way, you might want to expand the 'SC' in your location. Some of our international members might not know what that means.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
I intend to be a participant in this beautiful forum. But my gear is not that sophisticated - that's why I feel a bit shy to speak aloud here. My camera is Canon SX510 hs -- will it be of any use to start with? I have a notion that at least a dSLR is a must for learning photography. But I am a bit afraid of a dSLR to handle with and also by its price. I introduce myself with this candid and may be a foolish statement. Please bear with. Thank you.

No way. There lots of really poor photographers out there with the most expensive and sophisticated gear. It's the person who makes good pictures, not the equipment.
Sure, sophisticated gear opens up the options for you for capturing different images, but if you work to get your camera to perform to its best capabilities, then you can produce great images.
So, what you write is most certainly not a foolish statement and you are a very welcome members of this forum.

Hello Ian and welcome. We could maybe just point out to the uninitiated that Nairn is in that wonderful place called Scotland. Good to have you here.
CiC is very much a learning resource and alongside the tutorials that make up one part of the site, this forum aims to be a source of information, knowledge and skill through the exchanges that take place between members. There is no such thing as a daft question on here. And one good thinmg is that even the most experienced and proficient photographers on here, remember that they too were once just at the start of the learning curve.
Once you start wanting to post images for comment and critique, please put them into either the Nature & Architecture or People & pets sections of the forum. Sometimes people are not sure about asking for comments and criticism on their images. This thread gives you some helpful advice and guidance about how to get the best feedback from fellow members.

Gary - Glad to hear it. Great to have you here.
CiC is one forum where you don't have to be an expert before you join. That's the whole purpose of the site - to learn. So please do join in. If you have any questions about using the forum, just shout.

Now that's a coincidence. I noticed your post just as I'm in the middle of scanning about 150 slides for my sister-in-law (from about 30+ years ago). I've already done a whole lot of others for her ... as well as all my own.
Great to have you here Justin and I hope you enjoy being part of CiC.
