Hello Mick and welcome to CiC. It's good to have you here.
CiC is very much a learning resource, so I hope you find that being involved helps you improve your photographic knowledge and skills.
If you ever need any help in getting images posted into your message, then please do read the helpful guide that walks you through how to do it. Click HERE to read the thread.
Something else you might find useful. Sometimes people are not sure about asking for comments and criticism on their images. This thread gives you some helpful advice and guidance about how to get the best feedback from fellow members.
Finally, we ask people to try and write in proper English; i.e. using capitals and punctuation. Many of our members do not have English as their first language and and struggle to understand what is being written if it's not done using normal 'rules' of writing.
And definitely finally, so that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Hello, Thormod (Tom among friends and English speakers) from Norway here.
Don't be fooled by my join date. When I took up photography, I searched the Internet to find resources knowledge. Created an account here and promptly forgot about it.
I shall try to make up for it.
Tom

Hello Reiner. Great to have you here.
The good thing about people on this forum is that even those with a huge amount of knowledge and experience don't forget that they were once just at the stage that you are at now. So, the ethos of this forum is that we're all here to help each other as much as we can.
So, there's no such thing as a dumb question on CiC.
Worst lurker of all time? Possibly.
I joined CiC a while back, but life has gotten in the way of actively pursuing any meaningful improvement as a photographer. My main photographical pursuits have been capturing the early years of our two children. My interests extend to portraiture (a more calm, structured portraiture than my two boys usually provide!) and street photography, but as I said, pursuing those interests has been limited. I’m determined to follow Colin’s school of portraiture… and actually do the lessons (Grey card purchased).
My wife and I currently share a Nikon D3000, the two kit lenses that came with it, and sb-400 flash all purchased some years ago.
I’ve been studying the tutorials and forums as much as I can. As a result of all that reading, I’ve recently switched to shooting more in manual and more recently RAW. The learning curve has been magnificent in regards to shooting manual. Even, if I switch to the more automated modes, I’m learning so much more about how they’ll react, from shooting manual. As for the RAW, I’ve only just started trying to process the first few files. We’ll see how that goes.
No posts until now as tutorials and forums were answering all my questions, and I feel massively under-qualified to provide any sort of feedback to anyone else. Sorry for the lurking
Hi I'm quite new to DSLR photography and I'm slowly learning what the many camera settings actually do. The style of photography that I like best is landscape and as my hobby is sailing I get opportunity to use my hobby locations for this. I live in Northern Ireland and one of my especially favourite locations is Strangford Lough.

Hi Alan, and a warm welcome to CiC. And congratulations on posting your first image, which I do like. To get feedback you would be best to re-post in one of the main forums where more folks will see it.
My take is that the yacht is the focus and the background supports it, so that is fine. The depth of field looks good too, and I like the way the jetty leads in from the corner. I would crop out some of the "dead space" behind the yacht which doesn't add anything. I would also clone out some of the bits and pieces in the water on the right which are rather distracting.
If you have cropped from the bottom I would give it more space there, it looks a bit squashed. Otherwise, something to think about next shoot,.
Any comments on composition are always subjective!
Cheers,
Dave
Many thanks for your comments, I think that I need to get more familiar with what I am seeing in the view finder and perhaps frame the picture better at the outset.

Hi.. My name is Art and I live in the beautiful Okanagan Valley which is in southern British Columbia, Canada.
I have been interested in photography since I was very young but didn't get seriously involved until the '80s. Olympus cameras was my choice and I had an OM1, and OM2, and I still have and OM10 although it hasn't been used for years. Strangely enough my OM10 became my favorite after I added the optional manual shutter speed adapter. My hobby tapered off in the early 90s due to health problems and an increased work load at my employment. I worked for an RV manufacturer and did do some brochure shots and salesman award presentation pictures but not else for quite awhile. The arrival of grandchildren renewed my interest and then digital photography really piqued my interest. I had been involved with computers both at work and at home for years and combining photography with the computer was a winner for my interest. My first digital camera was bought for me by my employer in 2001 when I had to stop work due to further heart surgery. It was a HP PhotoSmart C618. I later bought a Canon PowerShot A480 because it would fit in pocket and go everywhere with me. Early this year I decided to get more serious but couldn't afford DSLR but I did want a view finder, so I settled for a Fujifilm Finepix S8300. So far I love it. The 42X zoom is super and it has enough features to keep me learning for the foreseeable future. I have kept very busy going through the tutorials on this site and look forward to become very involved. Thank you all....

New try at landscape with more foreground, the background seems a wee bit fuzzy could there a problem perhaps with depth of field

Alan - This is not the thread for posting images for comment. You won't get responses by trying to post in here.
If you are looking for comment & critique, then you need to create new threads in, for the subject matter you're referring to, the 'Nature & Architecture' section of the forum.
Hi, I'm new to this site, I am Italian and not a professional photographer, I find this site very interesting. Sometimes I am also a teacher of photography and this place is a good place to find new ideas and helpful techniques, many thanks to the editors.
I hope you forgive my bad English.
If you want to view some of my images look at this couple of links:

Hello, Vinicio. Welcome to the CiC forum. You write English very well.
I hope you do enjoy being a member of the forum and that you find it helpful. As well as you learning from others, I hope you will share your knowledge and experience so others can learn from you.
I do like your night time image of San Gimignano.
