    Welcome Phillip,

At that point, it would also be useful to know which make/model of camera you now have, since this needs to effect the advice you are given (e.g. it's pointless us advising you to do something you cannot).

When I moved from an "auto only" digital camera to a 'proper' one (back in 2007), it was to a "bridge" camera (a Fuji S6500), which allowed full control (and even RAW capture) and I learnt a lot with it, before finally expending 'mega-dosh' in 2009 on a DSLR (it cost me almost 10x what the Fuji did to replicate the functions and lens range I had).

There are many members here shooting with bridge cameras, if that's what you have, so welcome to the forums.

You certainly have a good range of subjects to choose from with those interests.

    All the best, Dave

    Fred Thomas Introduction

My father was a Professional Photographer who specialized in a very niche market photographing registered cattle / horses with a 8x10 field camera. So I was introduced at an early age to photography and was his pack mule starting at age 10. He eventually taught me to develop and proof his 8x10 images and I progressed to 35mm B&W. We would also make long drives in the Western US for him to photograph the beautiful scenery to be found along the California Coast and mountain ranges throughout the West. I was always dismayed at the need to wait for the light to be just right with only the impatience that can be exhibited by a kid.

Currently I live in the Philippines and closed a commercial photography business a few years ago in order to relocate. Living in the Manila area is a challenge - traffic, poverty, over crowding, poor air quality and it is hot and humid. Other than that the Filipino people are delightful to be around. My wife is a Dentist with a practice in Mandaluyong. There are some wonderful places to travel in the Philippines that take you away from the frantic and hectic Manila to more tranquil and beautiful beaches, great snorkeling around some of the world's great coral reefs.

I lived in Hong Kong for a few years and was fortunate to travel just about every country in the Pacific Rim photographing in some wonderfully exotic locations and often in some challenging if not risky environments. I later returned to the US and opened a studio and digital imaging business in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

Currently I am going through a major transformation in the focus of my photography. It feels at times that I am beginning from scratch. I changed from shooting Canon 5D MK II to Fujifilm X-Pro1. A much lighter and easier system to travel with and far less conspicuous on the street. A good thing for street photography and hopefully avoiding the "holduppers", a Filipino description of a mugger.

I am happy to have found this site and am truly impressed by the forums and exceptional images to be found here.

Hello, Fred and a very warm welcome to the CiC forum.

There's obviously a lot of experience and knowledge there. I hope you will feel able to share it on here so that people can learn from you. Hopefully, too, you will learn from the knowledge and experience of others on here. That's very much what CiC is about.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hi folks, I'm Tony living in Cheshire in the UK, retired and finding my way back into photography, if we still call it that in this digital age. I treated my daughter to a nikon p600 and am now bombarded with questions on using all the features. Out have come all the old books etc and with the Internet age, all the questions can be answered. Started years ago with a Nikkormat FT3 (and still have it with lenses) , gone through a D70 and D3100 but due to the airlines move to 5kg hand baggage have moved on to a P600 myself. The pocket camera is a Canon Ixus 80is. General interest connected to travel but no doubt will be challenged by my competitive daughter, who may well be a new member shortly!

Hello Kathrick and thank you for joining the CiC forum.

As to your question, the fact is that Canon and Nikon are both the leading brands and both make high quality products. People become very loyal to the brand, so Canon owners will say Canon and Nikon owners will say Nikon. It is a matter of personal choice for you.

Great to have another Scots-based 'tog on board. Welcome, Jamie.

So far as I'm aware, there are no other full-time pros currently active on the forum. Some people do sell some work, but the vast majority are enthusiasts. But no less skilled and knowledgeable fro all that.

So, I hope you'll enjoy being part of the forum.

By the way, where are you?

Hi, I'm Alan from just outside of Johannesburg in South Africa. I have just returned to photography after an absence of 20 years. My last camera was a Pentax SP1000 and I've started back with a Nikon D3200. I must admit I am somewhat overwhelmed with all the buttons and menus, but I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon. No preferences for any particular type of photography yet.

Alan - You're like many of us on here (myself included) who 're-discovered photography' after an absence of many years during which 'life' sort of got in the way. So, you're in good company.

I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and find it enjoyable as well as useful.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hello Everyone,

I am Mrinmoy from Mumbai, India.

I am a software developer and nurture photography as my hobby. I have been addicted to photography since last 8 years when I bought by 1st digital camera. Below is my timeline in terms of camera.

    1. Yashica Film Camera in i guess 1996 when I hardly knew anything about photography. I always selected 800 ISO film thinking that higher the better
    2. Looking at the rate at which I used the films in yashica, my dad bought me a digital camera in 2006, it was Nikon Coolpix L2. That was when I actually started liking photography and it became my hobby.
    3. That went dead in 2010 and started giving all pink coloured images, I guess it was because I had used it in rain couple of times. Since then I started using my girlfriends Nikon Coolpix L110. I used it for 3 years. In 2013 I tried my first bracketing photo with L110. I had to take 3 different shots at 3 different exposures manually as it did not have that facility. That was the time when I felt that my requirements are more and L110 cannot cope up with that. I must admit that L110 helped me a lot in learning photography. I knew every single menu of that camera like back of my hand.
    4. In 2013 I bought my 1st DSLR. Being a Nikon owner for so many years, it was for sure that no other brand had any chance in my room. D5200 with 18-55 kit lens.
    5. What an amazing camera it is !!! I never thought that setting up a DSLR and changing menus on the fly would be so easy. I must say D5200 is the best entry level DSLR. Had Nikon not given the GUI in terms of 3 circles for S, A, ISO, I would have always stuck in that triangle. Recently I bought my first prime lens. Obviously it is the on which almost every new photographer buys. Nikon 50mm 1.8G . I am Still trying my hands on it

I have done photoshoot of one of my friend and looking to take photography as a career option. Lets see how do I start with. Fingers Crossed

Hi! I'm David from New Jersey. After several point and shoots and a Canon eos rebel xs which sort of malfunctioned, I bought a Canon 60d a few months ago and added a 50 mm 1.8 lens to the kit 18-200. I'm almost reaching beginner status with the 60d but am going backwards, it seems, with Canon's post processing software. I shoot raw/jpg and don't have much of a clue what to do with the files/images. I've joined your site for help, for sure. Thanks for being here.

David - That's the normal trajectory. So, hard as it may be at times, don't get dejected. Things will improve and start to make sense and all that learning will have been worth it. Stick with it.

Great to have you here and I hope you enjoy being part of this forum. Lots of people are very willing to share their knowledge and experience. All you have to to do is ask the questions. And there is no such thing as a dumb question on CiC.
