I've looked over many of the VERY helpful tutorials---but I really don't comprehend what I read

Does anyone know of FREE video "sites"----I would greatly appreciate any help!!

I look forward to getting to know some of you & improving my photography!!

Dear Laura...when you are just starting (everyone goes through that do not worry your head yet...) the terminologies are just overwhelming...but as you move along it will be easier then suddenly you will not even noticed that you are using the same language we are talking about. Be patient.

Welcome to CiC. This is a learning community first and foremost. We are more chummier (as Dan from Alaska once said to me...) than most forums. Oh we have our little heated discussions here and there sometimes but most of it are from the techie side of camera or graphics software or some peripherals. Here anything that you do not understand it is easy to ask...and you will be sure you will get an answer.

To overcome some of your fears or whatever, is to join the conversation, ask what you do not understand from a post of someone or upload your photos and ask for a comment or critique to improve your shot. Make friends without being nasty because no one here are...we are all people. We learn and grow with one another. I can even tell a guy I love him without his wife getting jealous because I really like his photos and his preference seems to parallel mine. Not many of us have meet one another in person really so it does not matter. Look around and post and comment. It is part of the learning experience. As you grow with us, you will find that you will be also discerning about your own photos and will take care not to repeat the mistakes others do. Start with us and grow with us beginning now.

Welcome to the CiC forums from me.

The best advice I can give you is not to try to learn everything in one go - it is too overwhelming.

Identify specific tasks or concepts you want to understand, learn (only) those, practice until you are comfortable - and only then progress to another subject.

By all means ask questions here (well, not in this thread), as you have regarding LR, but do give us enough information to be able to help - if you are too vague, you will only get vague answers - and they won't help with understanding things at all.

You express an interest in videos, one warning regarding YouTube, you'll find lots of conflicting advice there, so I strongly suggest you find one prolific Tuber whose style you get on with and stick to him/her, so you get consistent presentation and advice. I wish I could think of a decent example, but my mind has gorn blank, sorry.

#2 zero to hero depends on how easily or difficult you absorb the learning process of photography. One way to help you is by your participation to this forum by:
a. posting your photo and asking for comment on it or critique, and
b. looking at other's postings and commenting on them too or if you feel inclined to, critique them.

#3...come and join us in our learning journey and making friends with some of us or all of us...then we get to know you through your pictures as you get to know us through ours.

Simple, huh? Then the rest is up to you.

I am surprised that only WilliamK actually did the right thing here and filled in his profile with everything needed for him to start joining us here. Folks, this is a learning community and we are not here to collect personal information from you even if we get to know what part of the world you live in or how you wanted us to address you. WE do not really care what sort of camera you use, the most important is that you post your image, ask for comments about it or critiques on it, join us in our ongoing conversation, acknowledge the people helping you and make friends with us. That is not a big ask, isn't it? Do make friends with us...come and join us in our learning, both yours and ours. Get to know us through our photos just as we will from you.

Hi everyone. Sorry, but I just felt the need to write something here. I recently joined CiC and probably made a "Pho-pah" (please excuse the almost pun) in including a photo in my first introductory post.....although I thought I read it was permissible to do so. I also included, as part as my "brief introduction" my present camera's as I see other's have done and which, I personally, find very helpful as it shows who I may be able to ask for specific issues if I should run into problems. Anyway, I amended my first post but cannot help but feel that despite being assured that everyone is friendly, it does seem that some responders are somewhat "critical" of what others feel they wish to, or do not wish to, include. I can certainly see the benefit of people filling out their profile's and I am sure it is frustrating to all of the "old hands" to keep repeating themselves, but maybe people might be more inclined to post more frequently if the "welcome" has more "ing" to it! Just a thought. I certainly am not looking to start any arguments. Just an observation. I thing CiC is a great site with tons of information and the tutorial's are great. I even tried entering a mini competition and have enjoyed seeing the great photo's members have been taking and posting. I only hope to improve to their standards and I hope this post doesn't get me thrown off the forum as I hope to continue to learn and hopefully "meet" more people. Derek

I am so sorry if I offend anyone. My first language is not English and I feel that I have asked for people to fill in their profile before someone else tells them to. Not all members usually respond to New Member's post here and I did like to remind people to do so because it makes it easier for us to help them when needed. The place in the world is helpful for members to refer them to stores where they might be asking to find stuffs for their photographic needs; the Real name or nickname area is for reference when we are talking or messaging to one another in the post. We do not always remember the first post where people write their names underneath. We have plenty of people here to remember and not all of the members are really that young anymore, including me who once in a while, if I do not list things I forget, have a bout of amnesia. Good for you for filling in your profile. I hope everyone who joins in here will do so to right from the start. If not, they will be told, one way or the other by moderators or some other members.

Whether you believe it or not, we are all friendly. Once in a while there will be some heated discussions here but mostly on technical issues. Don't dump everyone here as like me. They are not like me. We are all different. We try to help one another and get to know one another only through the posts we submitted or through photos we want to have comments or critiques for helping everyone improve. Observe some more if you like before you jump in and you will find that what I said here is true. When I get to grasp of the English language, I will improve the way I say things. Dave, one of our moderators here sometimes jumps in on after me if I make a mistake but this is the process of learning all of us must go through -- like fire, or dancing to avoid the bullets.

BTW, I live just across the river from you...here in Missouri, but I am an Australian.
