Last year I bought a Fuji Finepix SL300 bridge camera, but still lack "inspiration". :(
FWIW I'm a Linux user, so no Photoshop for me, just GIMP.
Hi Norm,
I started with a similar FujiFilm camera to your SL300 (back in 2007), so I know from experience this should be more than adequate to learn the basics of photography with - perhaps in combination with our tutorials here at CiC.
With regard to inspiration, I'd suggest trying a few different subject genres and see what give best results and most enjoyment - that's probably not going to be anything outdoors today!
Do you have any other interests that you could perhaps combine photography with?

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi again,
I had a good look around CiC before I joined up, so I've got a basic idea of what's available.
I tried a few genres last year, some of which I'll post in due course for critique.
Haven't tried indoor stuff yet, but just bought a table-top tripod, just in case.
I need to take some pics of one of the granddaughters to upgrade the "rogues gallery", so I daresay (know) I'll be asking about them too.
My other main interest is my computer, but like me, it's not particularly high powered.

Hi, I'm Dave. I just found this site by a Google search on the internet.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi, I'm Teresa and I started taking photography courses about 3 years ago. The instructor raved about this website and recommended that I check it out. I still consider myself a beginner in photography and I'm hoping to learn more about photography through the tutorials and the forums. I'm looking forward to participating with the group. I am from Calgary, Alberta and enjoy taking all kinds of pictures.

It's great to have you here and I hope you carry on loving the CiC resource for a long time to come.
By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

What a nice instructor!
Hello Teresa. Thank you for deciding to join in the CiC Forum. I hope you find that it does complement your learning on the course that you have taken and are taking. And I hope your instructor pointed out that there is no such thing as dumb question here on CiC. The only thing that's dumb is the person who ever suggests that soemone has asked a dumb question ... which I don't think has ever happened on here. If it did, we'd quickly blast it from the forum.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
good morning! Have always loved Cambridge, used in for years as a media instructor. Hoping to connect with other folks in this ever-changing field.
Not familiar with the site; was looking for the simple "post" instructions, or button, to ask my first question....(regarding ICC profiles not available from Epson for their new "metallic" surface paper on my epson 3800 printer)! Perhaps you can send me a link?...seems perhaps I am visually missing something?....thanks so much

Hello and welcome.
First thing - So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. As to your question:-
- Decide into which section of the forum you wish to post a message. In the example you give I wouls suggest 'Image post processing and printing'
- At the top left of the list of threads you will see a shaded tab - '+ Post New Thread'
- Click on that and write you message.

Howdy Folks. I'm Joe and as you may have guessed, I reside in Texas; specifically, in that section known as the "panhandle". Pleased to be a part of the forum. I am a "pre"-novice to the art of photography. Hence I am looking forward to any and all help in advancing my skills in the medium of digital photography. My primary interest is astro-photography. In 2014 I started in earnest using a Canon Rebel T3i with a Tameron SP 70-300mm lens and with the moon as the subject matter. I did get reasonable photos of the April 4 lunar eclipse, several shots of the July 29 young moon and the August 8(?) super moon. The results approached the lower end of acceptable. The primary reason I joined the forum is to get help improving my camera skills. Eventually, I look forward to attaching the camera to a telescope as a long term objective.
Again, I am excited to be part of the forum.
Regards,
Joe

Hello, my name is Chuck, I am 35, I live next to the Ozark National Forest (US), and I am an artist by trade. I love all mediums, but focus on Oil Painting, Digital painting, and Graphite.
My main focus for a long time, in photography was for reference material, then I started playing with photography to document my work, and then that led to an interest in Reproduction photography. Which, has shown me a whole new world of photography beyond the "Auto Icon" settings. This new information is sparking an interest in photography as an art form, as well as, creating much better reference photos, that in turn is, driving creative leaps in my paintings.
The last 15 years I have been painting in Photoshop, so alot of the post production is the same and is like second nature :D. I am currently using A Nikon 5100D bundled w/18-55mm f5.6 , that my parents gave to me :), and an 85mm 1.4 Prime Manuel Focus, I bought for Taking pics of my paintings, but mostly use for aggravating the wife and kids in in-prompt-to photo shoots :P. I have an Epson SP-7890. I am extremely Focused on accuracy and calibration of my equipment, (because of the Reproduction Aspect) and I am looking forward to participating in this community!

Hello, Chuck and a very warm welcome to the forum. You refer to photographing your paintings. Do you have a link to those online we could view? I'd love to see them.
As for photography, I think you'll find a number of like-minded people on here in terms of your focus on accuracy and calibration, with whom you'll be able to engage in endless discussion. But I also hope we'll see your photographs. Good to have you here.

Oh My these are embarrassing, I showed them to a local photographer and he is the one that directed me into actually studying photography as apposed to click and shoot, say about 2 weeks ago. I have been gathering things to create a studio in my garage, as well as reading and watching anything related to it online, local library, etc. In my research I realized to do a proper job I needed good reference points, so I bought some of the Datacolor items SpyderCube, Spyderprint, Spyder-elite, Spydercheckr. I needed a printer for my frame shop, small out of the way town, hard to get fine art prints here, so I bought the SP7890, and thought no better time to expand my knowledge, and learn what I don't know and fill in those areas.
This photographer Also told me it would be a good investment to get an 85mm prime lens for shooting my paintings and a CPL filter. So I have had it for a week now and I cant put it down, ... Bokeh, Manuel focus, Fixed focal length, I am hooked and want more :P I want one in every size... though I would not mind having a few with Auto-focus :D. I however have yet to set up and shoot a painting with it, he was going to stop by with some grey muslin to hang in the garage and show me how to light it with my 2 85wx5 cfl light stands, but we have had weeks of bad weather and these hills can be tough with ice on them.... can you tell I have been confined inside, with nothing to do but think about cameras, I am so excited.
