My name is Lloyd. I live in Michigan, USA. I am retired; have shot on film since 1960; used Nikons since 1970; I like nature, underwater, bird, and industrial/architectural photography. I have not shot seriously in the last 34 years: just snapshots and vacation stuff. I am on the verge of buying my first serious DSLR. Maybe a Nikon D5500 (price is a factor). I am finding that digital photography is different in so many ways. I have a lot to learn.

Hi, I'm Peter, USA and I like shooting people using off camera flash. But. how do I post to any of the other discussions?

It bis in deed, Lloyd, but in so many other ways it is not so different. The skill and vision involved in seeing a good image and in composing the shot are all still the same. The difference obviously comes in terms of the means of then capturing that and turnin g it into the finished image.

I've just joined the ranks of the retired and beginning to discover that I can go out with the camera on a weekday afternoon. It's wonderful.

Great to have you here and I hope you enjoy it.

I have followed CIC for a few years, love it. I live in New Zealand, spent most of my working life teaching art. Now that I am retired, Ive bought a Nikon D5300. and a Vanguard Alto series 70 tripod. I am learning Lightroom and will move to Photoshop when I am more confident. I am drawn to landscape photography, especially high detail, slightly over the top stuff. Picture making in Fine Art and Photography have interesting parallels, particularly in the area of Romanticist and Classicist ideas.

Hello, John and welcome to CiC. It's a pleasure to have you here.

You obviously have a very solid grounding in the creation and appreciation of art, which will undoubtedly transfer and set you up in terms of your adoption of photography as a new way of expressing your vision. I look forward to you being active in the forum, both as learner and teacher.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

I am a new member, found Cambridge in Colour through a link when I signed up for an online course in photography (Dash Insider). I have been taking photos for a long time since my high-school days, then stop for many years (except for vacation snapshots) while I raise up two boys. Now that I am retired I am taking up photography as a serious hobby. I am technically competent but very dissatisfied with my photos. Read widely on photography. My favourite quote is "the artistic vision to see the world in a grain of sand" (or words to that effect) How do I acquire this artistic vision? My photo collections are kept at: https://www.flickr.com/photos/cheewengyeoh/

In the past, in relation to this topic, I have referred to a series of articles I read on another website. These were by US-based French photographer, Alain Briot and published on the Nature Photographer's website. If you click URL="http://www.naturephotographers.net/farchives.html"]HERE[/URL] and then scroll down to the April 2009 list you will find the first of these. Then follow the trail up through May, June and July 2009. These 4 papers made a huge contribution to my thinking and development. They may also do so for you.

Hello, my name is Paul. I am now retired and about to revive my interest in photography after a 10 year break. All my previous experience is with 35mm film cameras, most recently with Pentax MX. Looking forward to getting to grips with digital. I like photographing nature, landscapes and Motorsport.

Thank you, Donald, I have bookmarked your recommended reading and would study it in detail at leisure. I have taught myself photography mainly through reading books because I am an avid reader. From books to trial and error over many years. So far, after 3 months of the online course I think I have made more improvement than I did over the past several years. Critiques by fellow photographers, especially those who are professionals and semi-professionals really helped a lot. What I did not realized was the significant part of post-production in the process of creating artistic images. So I am now seriously learning post-production techniques too. So much to learn!

Hi all, I'm the ultimate newbie; I don't yet have a camera and have only ever taken a few shots with a P&S back in the day when we still used rolls of film. I hope to buy a DSLR very soon and have been doing a lot of cramming before I do (I found this forum via your DOF calculator). You all seem very friendly and learned and I hope some day to contribute too.

Hello Paul. Thanks for joining CiC.

The technical stuff to do with digital is different, but the basics of composition and exposure are just the same.

I hope you enjoy being part of this forum.

I jest. There are people on here with huge amounts of knowledge and skill and when you put it all together, it really is an amazing resource. So, whenever you have questions, please just do jump in there. If you don't ask, then you'll never get the answer.

That's fine. This forum is for enthusiasts, not for people with all the latest gear who like to tell you that they've got all the latest gear.

    Welcome aboard.

Maged - It is a pleasure to welcome you to the forum. I hope you find it useful and enjoyable.

I see that you have already have asked a question. Unfortunately you have posted it in this thread where many people who may be able to help are unlikely to see it. For that reason I have copied it into the 'People & Pets' section of the forum. More people are likely to see it there and be able to offer suggestions.
