I wonder if someone could explain where the name 'Cambridge in colour" came from?

I look forward to learning lots, seeing great images and hopefully posting some too!

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

Hello Martin. If you go to the site's home page and right at the bottom click on 'About', you'll get the story. But, in summary, it was set up by Sean when he was a post-grad student at Cambridge and the name just sort of stuck.

Hi Everyone ,

I am a keen photographer and have been taking pics since i was little .
I have had many camera's through the years and really didn't want to go digital , my daughter went around the world with this tiny camera and sent us back discs with these amazing images on , i put my Cannon Eos 500 for sale and bought a Fuji small camera , then went onto the bridge cameras , i then decided to change brand to Panasonic which i had FZ18 then the FZ28 and FZ48 my latest edition is the Panasonic FZ200 .
I loved my FZ48 and had it a good many years , the feature i loved the most was the macro zoom , unfortunately this camera doesn't have that feature but hey it has a lot more features so can't grumble .
I have a Raynox 250 which is great for this camera and a few filters ND8 and Circular Polarizer .
I love to experiment with my pictures in Photoshop Elements , Lightroom , Zoner 16 , Photomatics , Perfect Effects and Photoscape . I like to create something different like a piece of art .
When we go on holiday i always create a slideshow using Proshow Gold i have used it for years now and find it so easy and reliable to use, i have lots of videos on you tube my name is Catsaway1 if anyone wants to watch any.
I also post pictures on Flickr i am chrisjaz on there to .
I am English and we have lived in France for 8 years now i love going to different places and seeing all the buildings .
Our daughter lives in New York so we spend time there lots to photograph there to .
I am a happy photographer love nature especially flowers and wildlife ,and macro , anything that looks interesting to me to i will take a shot of it .I always have my camera with me where i go .
I hope to find lots of hints and tips and also give any away if i have any .

Hi Christina - Welcome to CiC. I think you'll find we have a very broad membership from relatively new photographers to ones who are quite advanced. Some of us do still shoot film as well.

Could you please click the "My Profile" button on the top of this page, which will take you to another screen. Here click the "About me" tab and please fill in at least your real name and where you live. You can edit the field by clicking on the "pencil" icon. You've shared this information here, but filling it in will attach this information to each of your postings. We're a pretty informal bunch here at CiC and go on a first name basis.

Neil - Stupid basic questions are where everyone had to start at one point. The good thing about this forum is that even the most skilled and the most knowledgeable don't forget that fact. The only stupid question is the one you don't ask, because you think people will think you're stupid!!

Hello!

I was referred to this site by someone at another forum I visit, I can see its buzzing with activity. Being fair I don't have an advanced SLR, only a bridge camera by Nikon. Its ok but doesn't do the more advanced stuff I would like do and learn. I'm a complete novice in relation to the best cameras available. I have looked on places such as Tech Radar/The Register/Inquirer, which have long lists of good low/mid/high SLRs, sadly I find them too confusing. I am hoping to receive some advice relative to the best equipment for my budget. I see there are lots of tutorials which I think I would benefit loads from.

Though one question which program do people use for photo editing?

JP, it will be nice if you can go back to your Profile and tell us the name you wanted us to refer to you as...we are an informal group here and we like to call people by their first name or nickname even. It does not matter. Though we have rules around here we stick to them, sometimes... don't be put off.

Here we do not care what sort of camera you have, it is the result that comes out of it that does. If you have any problem at all, ask. We all have to start somewhere. There is no stupid questions here, just novice questions, and we have been there...hence we try to help those that has lesser knowledge. This is a learning community...come and join us, jump in on any conversation you are interested in. Make friends. Look at some post and comment on them. Ask questions about anything you noticed. I can assure you that any thing that intrigue you will be answered...sometimes in jest, most times seriously...join us in our journey of learning different ways to photograph stuffs. We are not all experts in many things, though some are...don't be shy to participate as you will learn how to socialize too here apart from learning different methods, different genres of photography.

Hi - I'm Christina & I presently live in Somerset, U.K.

I've been taking photos for a long time ... (remember film?) - so no spring chicken, haha! I've accumulated a bit of gear over the years, of course - but most of the time, I'm too lazy to lug it around. So chances are, I take most of my images with the worst gear I have; the smallest camera body (APS-C size sensor) & an abominable 18 - 300mm f/6.3 lens ... that is, if I've got it with me at all. To be totally honest, I shoot most of my photos on my phone now.

I think it doesn't matter what you shoot with - it all ends up as light converted to an image. As they say here in England (I'm not English, btw): Only a bad workman blames his tools.

I came across CIC through a Google search 'f/stops the human eye sees' if I remember correctly. I had a snoop around he rest of the site and it passed the C.R.A.P. (Currency, Reliability, Authority, Purpose) test for evaluating sources, so I did something I normally never do: joined somewhere!

That inexperience is starting to show big time now, however, as I can't figure out how to upload a profile picture, like some of the pictures, find threads again, vote for competitions - or do anything, really. Sigh.

I really need some help with that profile picture ... I am sure there was an option to do so when I first signed up but I can't find it now on my profile ... Donald, if you (or someone else) could point me in the right direction?

Hello Christina, and welcome to CiC. Now you have decided to join, I hope you will stick around and participate in the forums. We are all about learning and sharing, so I am sure you will fit right in.

There are a few things to get to grips with, as you've already found. For your avatar picture (and a few other things), click on Settings at the top of the screen, and on the left hand site you can see some options. These include an avatar which shows alongside all your posts, and a profile picture which (I think) just sits on your profile page.

Not sure why you are having trouble voting. If you click on Mini Competitions, then at the top you should see one or more "stickies" saying "voting underway". Click on one of these, and you will see a set of check boxes to vote, and the images listed underneath.

To like a picture, you have to hover your mouse over the image, and the words "Mark as helpful" appear at the bottom right. Click on this, which the translates into a like (don't ask me why the name changes!).

If you want more tips, don't hesitate to ask, but I hope this helps you get going,

My name is Bob Johnson. I have lived in Calgary, Alberta for about 35 years now. I am reasonably new to photography. About 2 years. I had the opportunity to recently acquire a Canon 7D along with an number of lenses from a photographer/friend of mine. I have been busy ever since learning some of the basics and always trying to improve and develop my photography skills. As an avid fly fisherman I especially enjoy recording my experiences on the river. I saw this forum and decided to join. I really like that the focus is on learning with opportunities for respectful/constructive feedback. I look forward sharing with you. My experience has been that the only way to get better is to shoot. A lot.
