Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello all! I've been dabbling in photography for the last 10 years or so but in the past 2 months I've started to study seriously.
I'm still trying to perfect shooting in manual and then I'd love to focus on light, composition and editing.
I'm excited to find an active photography community as lately I've been in a rut and could really use some outside perspective. I look forward to giving and receiving feedback!

Welcome to Cambridge in Colour. Filter are always useful and often expensive but a very valuable set of additions that save money inc are not come across them are step up and step down rings which enable you to use your 77mm filter with 72mm lens thread etc. See http://www.amazon.co.uk/Stepping-Ada...dp/B008H430NU/
Best wishes with your photography

Hello everyone! My name is Jessela. I've always been very attracted to everything in photography. I know it takes a lot of time and practice but I am willing to dedicate myself to it. It is something I've always had a passion for and something I've always wanted to master. Just a few months ago I took a break from school because it started getting very expensive so I'm putting all my time into work. However I haven't found myself doing anything that I can actually grow from. And since I've always had an interest in photography I took that leap! So please! If you have any recommendations or tips for a beginner, don't hesitate. :)
I also want to focus in on the fashion and entertainment side of photography.
I am starting with a beginner Canon (rebel t5i). Does anyone know any good attachments or lens to give a more dramatic look for portraits? Or setting's I can start with for concerts? I know, extremely noob questions.. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Thanks guys!
Jessela

Chantell - It's great to have you here. I certainly hope you find this sort of online community in which you think you can learn. You'll always find solmeone on here ready to answer questions, offer advice and guidance and, generally, share theri knowledge and experience.
The important thing is not to try and learn it all at once. One thing at a time.

Hello Jessela and welcome to the forum.
First thing - So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Now, there is no such thing as a dumb question on this forum. Everyone has to start by understanding the basics. The life can get more complicated further down the line. So please don't ever think you can't or shouldn't ask a questions.
As to your questions - Presumably you've got that T5i with a kit lens. What I'd say is don't even think about other lenses or attachments at this stage. Time again for my Lee Trevino story.
The story is told that former top-flight golfer Lee Trevino, when at his height and winning majors, told of how his way of learning and improving was to go out with one golf club. He would practice, practice and practice with that one club until he was confident that he knew he could make it perform to its absolutely highest level. He knew what the club should be able to do and that the only problem in getting it to do that was him.
So, if you're satisfied that you have practiced, practiced and practiced until you know you are getting the very best out of that T5i with the lens you have, then fine, go for new equipment. But, until then ....................!

Hi Paul. Great to have you here. I hope you enjoy being part of the forum and that you find it useful. I think it tends to be a lot friendlier that some others, based on the stories I've heard about how rude and aggressive some people are on these other forums. Anyone behaving like that on here is quickly shown the door.

Hi Everyone, my name is Andy and I am blessed to live on the beautiful Moray Coast in Scotland. Have enjoyed photography for many years but, after Ill health caused a change of direction, I am now self employed as a Landscape/Family Portrait photographer. Completely self taught and always willing to learn so very pleased to find this community. Do my own printing and have just upgraded to an Epson R2880 so I can use pigment inks and fine art papers. Found this forum when searching for information on softproofing. I'll put up a separate thread with some questions.
Looking forward to getting to know you all,
Andy

Hi, I'm DickyOZ I've just joined this forum. My interests are - landscape, macro and wildlife in general particularly birding. I greatly appreciate C&C, without it my skills never improve. I'm retired now and have been taking photographs for over 65 years; one day I'll get a good one! My current gear is an Olympus OM-D E-M1 with the following lenses: 12-40mm PRO, 40-150mm PRO + MC-14, 60mm Macro, and 75-300mm II. So I've got no excuses. We live in south-east Queensland where we have a wealth of scenery and wildlife.
Dicky.

Hello, my name is Josh and I'm from Rhode Island. I recently got into photography (because of the little guy below) and got my first DSLR in April of this year (in preparation for his birth). Since then, all I've done is practice and research with the hopes of improving to the caliber of many of the photogs that I've seen here. Other than candids of my son, I'm interested in portrait and landscape photography.
Currently I have a Nikon D5500, Nikkor 18-140mm 3.5-5.6, Nikkor 50mm 1.8G, Newwer VK750 II, and Adobe Creative Cloud. I look forward to learning even more from here as well as seeing other's work.

Jervis Bay and SE Queensland members. Good to keep a balance of Southern Hemisphere. We wouldn't want CiC to topple over!
Big hello to all the others on this page too! Cute kid Josh! Nice Gardens, Leo!

Portraiture is more about capturing the LIGHT and the MOMENT, than the lens that you use.
Post a few samples of your Portrait work in the "People & Pets Forum".
Seek: Advice; Comment; and Critique.
Sort the responses and act on those which are suitable and feel right for you.
What ever you do don't go out and buy lots of new stuff - YET.

Assuming you are not using Flash and using the Kit Lens at Night or Indoors:
"P" Mode
ISO at about ISO6400
EVALUATIVE metering
Centre Point AF
ONE SHOT AF
Single Shot Drive
Place the main subject in the centre of the frame to make AF.
At Daytime Outdoors
Same as above except ISO set ISO 800
Review the images and the EXIF data, ask questions and learn.

Hi Dave, delighted you have decided to sign up.
Don't worry about doing things wrong, we are a very relaxed bunch here, and if you are friendly and supportive, and want to learn and share as you said, you will fit right in. Just jump into any of the threads, or start your own.
My own interests are travel, wildlife and landscapes, so a pretty close match to yours. I am not really in to people and pets  but we all have something to learn from each other.
Whereabouts in England are you?
See you around,
Dave
