Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hello from Illinois in the USA. The name is Sam, I've been interested in photography for my entire life and active in it for over 50 years, as an Amateur. Now that I'm retired I have a lot more time to devote to photography, but not nearly as much money for buying equipment. Cameras I use are primarily Canon with the 7n (35mm film), XTi, and the 7D is my primary camera. I enjoy all kinds of subjects to photograph with more emphasis on outdoor shots including Macro and Wildlife. I also like the older Barns in this part of our country, as over the years we've been losing more and more of them. Unfortunately they are not being replaced with similar structures, but with modern Pole type buildings, or simply not replaced at all. That's primarily due to the disappearing family farms being replaced by large conglomerates owning huge acreages and run more like a large commercial operation. At least the pictures will give those in future generations something to look at and better visualize what farming use to be like.

Many thanks for the response! Having joined this forum to learn, I am grateful for your advice and shall research a bit more.
Why full frame? I assisted in shooting a wedding in Kenya and took some portraits with someone's 5D Mark II. The image quality was so much better than my backup 650d; especially in different lighting conditions.
The background to my thought process on the 5DSR: I'm looking to buy a great all-purpose camera for long-term use. Because of the high price of decent kit, I thought it would be prudent to get something in the higher ranges that will remain relevant for several years. So far, all the material and consultations imply that the 5DSR is the best in the business. One of my main concerns (before your post) was that the range of compatible lenses is quite limited and at a much higher price band. Oh, I am not a professional (my intended purchase is largely influenced by passion and aspiration).
Whereas I use a tripod regularly for landscape, nature and cityscape pictures, I definitely intend to shoot hand-held with the camera that I shall ultimately buy. It’s wonderful that you’ve pointed that out because none of the people and other forums that I have consulted made mention of that.

Hello, Sam and welcome to the forum.
You'll find a soulmate for older barns in Trevor (tbob), who's up above you in Canada (well, a bit to the left as well).
With 50 years experience under your belt I'm sure there's a lot of knowledge in there that I hope you will feel able to share so that others can learn from you.
So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Hi all,
As you can see I actually joined a little while ago, but got somewhat 'distracted'!
I consider myself a 'theoretical' photographer, like sheldon Cooper is a theoretical physicist! I read a lot about photography, I have some good gear, nice lenses (Nikon), too many camera bags (so the boss says!) but don't make the effort of going out and taking photographs. I could be classed as a 'professional' as I take photographs as part of my work (collision investigation). I also have 38 photographs on a stock photo website and have 'earned' $7.31!! I want to change that.........

My name is Trevor and I live in County Mayo, Ireland. I do a bit of hobby farming on 15 acres of land. I have many interests since retiring from industry and I am just starting digital photography. My son gave me his old Nikon D200 with aa AF-S 17-55 2.8 DX Lens, I bought Photoelements 13 and I am reading a lot of stuff. If the fog lifts I might update the Nikon body. Lets see how I go.

Hello Teotonio and thank you for joining this forum. This resource is very much about learning and a key purpose of the forum is to allow us to learn from each other by sharing our knowledge and experience.

Hello Dorjisonam. Thank you for joining this forum. I hope you find it useful and enjoyable.
There are many ways in which we can use the forum to improve our photographic knowledge and skills. You can post a message to ask a specific question. You can join discussions of the various topics that arise. And, if course, you can post images and ask other people to provide a critique of the picture.
If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.
Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here
Howdy from Oklahoma! Snerd is forums name for all, but real name is Mike. I got interested in photography about 2 years ago. Work was in the way, and also some surgeries on back and shoulders. I managed to buy some of the equipment I wanted to get.......a 7D, a 7DII, and my 5D3. I have some good red ring lenses, and now I just need to start to learn how to take better pictures as I can no longer fault the cameras and lenses lol. So i'll be browsing and reading up on different things I need help with, mainly flash and speed guns and such. I've managed to shoot some pretty bad beginner stuff, to some fairly, somewhat good-looking photographs. But I know my limitations. So I'll be hanging out and reading, asking questions from time to time. that's my story and I'm sticking to it.

That's great, Mike. Use the forum in the way that best helps you learn.
Great to have you here. Obviously there are lots of people on here from the US, but I think you might be the only person from Oklahoma who's currently active on the forum (someone's now going to come in and tell me I'm wrong!).
I hope you enjoy being involved.

From the very warm and welcoming city of Cape Town at the southern part of South Africa I bid you "hello".
I'm Jay.
I have recently bought a Canon DSLR which I absolutely love and can't wait to learn more of its capabilities having always used a 35mm film camera. Brings back many memories. My most memorable outing was at the 75th anniversary of the South African Air Force. Needless to say I spent a small fortune on film, developing and printing.
I hope to learn much more.

From the very wet, windy and cold, but equally welcoming village of Glenfarg up in the north western corner of Europe, a very warm welcome to the CiC forum. Great to have you here, Jay.
What model DSLR have you got? I'm another one that knows that Canon definitely make the best DSLRs!!
I think you'll find a lot of friendly people on here who will always be very willing to share knowledge and experience and who are keen that we all help each other learn and improve our photographic skills.

Hello, my name is Connie, and I live in Michigan, just below the thumb. The artist inside of me came out when I was a very young child and my creativity has been forever changing throughout my life; drawing, painting, poetry and photography are interchangeable components of who I am and who I am becoming. I'm inspired by nature's gifts, the ordinary and the extraordinary offerings that surrounds us all. I've joined this site to meet other photographers and to learn and expand my knowledge.
