    Hello from Oregon,
I am hardly new to photography - I began in the military in the early 1960s. I began with various 35's, through Leicas and Minoltas and in the past 10 years various digitals, settling on Lumix cameras and 4/3 cameras.

    Hello!

I'm Bron and I live on the Gold Coast Australia. I've photographing a couple of years. I photograph anything that catches my eye, but I do spend a lot of time using my DSLR for astrophotography/nightscapes.

I enjoy taking macros with my iPhone, some might argue it's not photography, but it really helped me understand natural lighting.....and how to be patient. I also love portrait, mostly 'lifestyle'.

Despite the amount of time I spend using my SLR, I haven't really found my niche. I'm a jack of all trades, master of none. Which is why I joined this group-to learn from the knowledge of others and improve my photography skills.

    Hi

i'm caroline @ present in the E Midlands, but still yearning for the Angus Hills where i recently spent 13 yrs.. over 30 yrs used 3 SLR's, fairly sucessfully. mainly landscapes (mountains!) , architecture & my children.

bought 3 rd hnd compact (Olympus)from my daughter 2 yrs ago & began to get reasonable photos of butterflies & insects. but it broke down earlier this year with screen covered in fine lines. took it into camera shop who grabbed it & persuaded me to start looking for replacement! actually wish i'd hung onto it.

after much online research finally bought a new camera . . . (all my SLR's, Pentax, Yashica & Cannon were from London Transport lost property sales long time ago) & am now returning it, unless someone can persuade me otherwise. it's a Sony NEX-6L. beautiful camera, but how do i catch freshly emerged Red Admirals fluttering up to tree canopies? the greater zoom lens would add to bulk & weight & make me even more vunerable to theft abroad (am just a doddery old lady with poor eyesight!). would a Cannon powershot suit my humble needs (inc Macro?). sorry this is more than just an introduction. but you must have realised one thing. hate buying things.

That's probably a pretty good place to be, 2 years into pursuing photography as a hobby. It's an ongoing learning process.

I hope you find that being part of this forum helps that learning.

Something else you might find useful. Sometimes people are not sure about asking for comments and criticism on their images. This thread gives you some helpful advice and guidance about how to get the best feedback from fellow members.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi! My name is Shawn, and I'm from Southern California. I joined this site because after much research, this place seems to be highly regarded for learning about photography.

I wanted to learn about photography for several reasons. First, the practical- I want to learn to take good photos to promote my business (online marketing), and to help sell many of the extra things I've collected over the years on eBay, etsy, Craigslist, etc. I've found that good photos really help connect buyers to goods offered for sale, and there is so much more to photography than meets the eye at first.

Next, comes the artistic reasons. I think photography would be a good medium for me artistically, because I have a complementary set of abilities. I have good technical skills that help me understand the mechanics of photography, and I have good vision, which helps to see things in ways others do not see them, and to present them from a different perspective. Being a "Southpaw" (which means "left handed"), I have a more right brained/visually active mindset that is biologically different than most people. I don't want this to sound snobby like I think I'm better than other people- NO! It's just that I have a way of seeing things that lends itself to this medium without having to be taught how to "see" things. Sorry I'm rambling- I am tired, and took a sleeping tab so I'm kind of on autopilot with stream of consciousness thoughts right now. Please pardon my rambling!

The thing is, I want to learn the techniques, the mechanics, the equipment, in such a way along with the necessary knowledge to get what I see in my minds eye when I view a subject to manifest itself in the real world (or is it really the digital world?) as what we know as a photo.

I know I have a lot of work to go, because I know a great photo when I see one, and I know I need to learn more to get my vision to that level of manifestation, and get MY photos to look something like the things I imagine before I take the shot. I just need to keep learning, and one day I'll get there. I'm hoping with your communities help, it will someday soon be so. I also hope to contribute as well when I can.

I'm at the point now that I am starting to know what I don't know- so I'm not totally lost. I know just enough to find my way here, and that I need to spend some time with the tutorials and to just get out and shoot, shoot, shoot! Then, go shoot some more!

There is a strange zen to photography- One could say, "All there is to (digital) photography is balancing Aperture/Shutter & ISO, and then composing your shot". Well, yes, that's true. but it's SOOOOOOOOO much more. Simplicity isn't as simple as it sounds. Anyway, before I bore you, or lest you think I'm insane, I bid you good night. Just wanted to say hi as was encouraged of new signups.

I'll be doing much reading & studying before I feel qualified to post, other than to possibly as a question. Thanks for such a comprehensive site with such a great bunch of people willing to share their knowledge of this beautiful, omnipresent, yet ill-understood artform.

Looking forward to growing with you all.

    Shawn

Hello Ken. Thanks for joining CiC.

You should put a post into the Digital Cameras & Equipment section of the forum and invite people to give their thoughts and opinions.

By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

And that is a very important point to reach on the learning journey. It means you are open to learning and that is just so important.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

    Hi,
My name is Tom. I am a student at UC Berkeley and am excited to soon be taking a digital photography course there. I started out with film and making my own B&W prints in the darkroom in high school. The next year I took an "advanced" photo course where I started using a DSLR. At the moment I am really interested in improving my workflow and learning as much as I can, especially with regards to the technical aspects of photography, as I believe that understanding these underlying principles is critical to success.

The issue with the D600 is that there is a mechanism to the side of the sensor that will occasionally spray oil onto the sensor (low-pass filter). This problem only existed on some of the first D600 cameras built. Reportedly these cameras would stop spraying oil after several thousand shots.

I bought a D600 soon after its release. It had dust problems, but when I had the sensor cleaned (under a stereoscope), the technician reported that no oil was present on the LPF. Evidently the oil problem was quickly detected and fixed by Nikon. Even so, the D600 became known for the oil problem, so Nikon released the D610 and archived the D600. The D610 is virtually identical to the D600 (except for a .5 FPS increase in continuous shooting speed), except one can be certain that it does not have the oil problem of the D600.
