Hi, I am Ganesh. I am living in the UK. My native is India. I am fond of photography. I am “pro photographer” not “prof.photographer”. Photography used to be my hobby during college days...when I was a member of photography clubs with limited old black cameras way back in 90's. Recently purchased a Canon DSLR..! So resuming ...!

I came to know about this site from one of my colleagues and I look forward to join the group

    Hi Sabya,

A warm welcome to our community. The important things are that you are keen on photography, and want to learn. Learning and sharing are what we are all about. Phones like the z1 are capable of taking excellent images, though they generally are not as capable as dedicated cameras. Please use the forums to ask questions, and do read the tutorials on this site - they are excellent.

This is a friendly place, and it would also be good if you could edit your profile to let everyone know whereabouts you are in world, and how you’d like to be known (in CiC terms your “real name”). To do that, you click Settings (right at top), then Edit Profile (on left) and put your first name in the Real Name field and where you are (roughly) in the Location field. That way, your details will appear alongside all of your posts.

    Best regards,

    Dave

Hello Ganesh, and welcome to our community You will find that photography has moved on quite a bit since your collage days - but the good news is that the old skills of composition and exposure are just as valuable now as they were back then. In fact, people who learned their photography in the film days (like me!) are often more careful and get better results than people who only know digital and just shoot away.

Probably, the biggest change is what we cam now do in a few minutes in a computer used to take hours in a darkroom.

You might like to update your profile so that we can call you "Ganesh" (does that mean you are a lucky photographer ), and decide whether your location is UK, India or both!

Look forward to hearing more from you,

    Dave

Hello, I'm Alan. I live in Newcastle, England.
After problems with alcohol and going through detox, I took up photography again as a hobby to help keep me off the booze. After years of using film, I am finding digital quite an eye opener and am enjoying the post processing as much as taking the photos (using CS6).
I started with the Nikon D60 and now use a D300s shooting landscapes and pictures of my 3 cats. I have studio strobes & backdrops so have tried some studio work.
Looking forward to some useful and informative tips from this site as well as sharing some of my own experiences.

Hello Alan, and a warm welcome to our community - glad you decided to join.

I think digital photographers are a bit divided between those who think post processing is a necessary evil, and those who enjoy it. Personally, I enjoy it, but it can keep me away from actually taking photographs.

Sharing and learning is what we are all about here, so I look forward to seeing you around in the forums. (Incidentally, if you haven't checked out the tutorials here you really should - they are excellent)

    Hi All,

I'm Vieve... I've been taking photos for many years, mainly travel - but with forays into portraits, food, landscapes and - recently - some macro work. I've just upgraded to a Canon 6D from a 400D...big step...and am undertaking a professional photography course over the next year or so. Hoping to build my 5th (or 6th?) career thereafter.

Until now I've run a series of my own businesses - mainly involving troubleshooting and fixing for large organisations.

I'm looking forward to interacting with everyone here, as the spirit takes us!

    Cheers,
    Vieve

Hi Sapphire, and a warm welcome to our community. That is quite a big question you have asked in just a few words. We really need some more information to help you. I suggest that you re-post your question here: https://www.cambridgeincolour.com/forums/forum2.htm where more people will see it.

You really need to say what kind of photography interests you (for example, landscapes, portraits, street, wildlife.......), and if you can how you see your hobby developing. That way,we will be able to make some suggestions.

There really is no "best" camera, it all depends on you and what your interests are. Spending thousands of euros won't necessarily get you what you need.

If there is a particular reason why you suggest Canon it would be useful to know - there are more choices than ever out there and many excellent brands.

Hello Daniel and a warm welcome. I look forward to seeing some of your images. With your background, I can imagine that you will also be one of us who find post processing a fascinating and absorbing part of the hobby.

Hi Vieve and a warm welcome - glad you have decided to join us.

Sounds like you have lots of varied experience, which I hope you will be sharing with us. Learning and sharing is what we are all about - there are folks here who are experienced in most aspects of photography, including some professional photographers who could offer ideas on a career (though they'd likely start by telling you how tough it is!)

Look forward to interacting with you though the forums, where you can show us what you can do with your new camera

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

hello, i live and work in dubai, UAE. Have been pursuing photography as a hobby since many years and worked with film, primarily B&W. I had to give it up for a few years due to certain compelling reasons and now i'm back at it only to find the whole world has turned digital. So, i'm now getting to grips with my newly acquired 650D and grappling to come to terms with post-processing, which has been nightmarish. Hope to learn the ropes from erudite members of this forum in time. Cheers!

Hi Nitin, welcome to CiC and the wonderful world of digital photography.

Yes, things have changed a lot, but some things like composition are just the same. Post-processing will seem nightmarish at first. Like anything else, it has a learning curve, but once you start up it I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Have you selected a software package to use, or are you relying on the DPP that came with your camera?

If you want to learn, you have come to the right place. Don't forget, though, that pp can make a good photo great, but it will never make a bad photo good

    Best wishes,

    Dave

Hello Mike and welcome to CiC. I imagine it's getting quite toasty in Arizona right now!

This is a good place to learn and share, and if you haven't already, do have a read of the tutorials on this site - they are excellent.

You might like to update your profile so that it shows "Arizona" as where you are, and your real name as Mike or Scoop, or whatever. That way it will show alongside all of your posts. Apart from being friendly, knowing whereabouts you are if often useful if you are seeking advice.

Hope to see you around the forums,

    Dave

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello. 25+ years ago, I was a film photo amateur with Canon A1 and had my own home dark room. Since then, I've had some cheap point and shoots, the last one was an Oly C725. After returning from Europe, I was not very satisfied with the quality and decided it was time for a new camera. I opted for a D3200 (entry level) for now as I have a limited budget. I hope to retire soon and want to travel and get back into taking better pictures. I am finding that I need to re-educate myself about all aspects of picture taking in manual mode and learning about digital. I look forward to reading and sharing with others.

Hello Valorie, and a warm welcome to Cambridge in Colour.

The technology has changed a lot in the past twenty five years, but the basics of taking a good picture haven't! For me, modern digital cameras are amazing pieces of technology, and open up possibilities that just weren't available (or, at least, were much harder to get) in the film days.

We do have a darkroom still, of course, it's just all inside the computer!

Learning and sharing is what CiC is all about. If you haven't checked out the tutorials here you really must. They chase away much of the fog around digital photography and cameras.

Hope to see you around the forums,

    Dave
