Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi there, I live in beautiful Cape Town and am very new to photography. I'm excited to be part of this group and know that I will pick up great tips and learn lots here.

I was advised by a good friend and excellent photographer to join CiC. Will be doing the tutorials soon and will make time to learn something new everyday.

I'm so excited to have finally bought a decent camera and can't wait to experiment with it.

    Warm regards
    Cheryl

And always remember that feeling of excitement. On those days when you're trying to learn a new skill or when you're attempting something new and it isn't working and all you want to do forget about this stupid hobby and wondxer why you ever got interetsed in it in the first place, remember how you felt when you wrote the post above and re-capture that feeling.

It does get frustrating at times, but it's worth it.

So, Cheryl, I hope you do enjoy being part of this forum and that you find that it does help you build up your knowledge and skills.

Hi, my name is Dayzemay and I'm from Australia. I have been using the point and shoot aspects of my camera but want to learn how to adjust the settings myself to improve my pictures. Often on holiday I have taken a great shot and then find the lighting and colour is not as good as it could be so I'm hoping to improve this. I'm not sure that I have a particular style in photography, although I like to capture the light in nature and I have tried some macro shots of flowers with bees etc which is very challenging.

Hello Dayzemay and welcome to theCiC forum.

As well as, hopefully, finding the tutorials on this website helpful, I hope you'll find this forum a useful source of advice, guidance and support. You can learn lots from reading the exchanges that take place between others, but there's no real substitute for getting in there and asking the questions that you want answered.

The good thing about this forum is that those who can help do remember that they were once where you are now - just starting to push yourself beyond the point-and-shoot auto settings stage. The one thing I've never seen written on this forum is 'You should already know that'. So, dive in.

Photography has become my passion ever since our first grandchild was born. It is a way of telling a story, a way of preserving memories whether of family times together or of our travels. There isn't one particular kind of photography that I focus on. It's really about what catches my eye at a given moment. Through out this journey I've continued to learn and grow, acquiring new skills and refining my the old. That said, there's still a long way to go and I look forward to learning from the members of this community.

And I hope you enjoy being part of the CiC forum and it is indeed somewhere where you feel you can and do learn.

So that you don't continue to get people asking you what your proper name is, because most us use that on here, you can go to Edit Profile (under 'Forum Actions' on the Menu Bar), or you can just press on 'Settings' on the menu bar right up at the top right of the window. Once there you can enter the name by which you wish to be addressed under 'Real Name'. Then it will appear underneath your Username in all your posts. You can also enter your location so that it does the same, just as in my details alongside this message. Then we all know where everyone is in the world.

    Hello world,

Another site newbie here. I shoot primarily fixed lens at the moment. My little x100s, and a AGFA Selectronic RF. Eventually after a nice FF, for Landscape. Hoping to learn a lot from the forum members..

    Hi,

So I am also new here, feeling totally intimidated by the site, but hopefully I'll get used to all the in's and outs soon!

Still trying to set up my profile, but I'm sure I'll find out how to do the avatar and the signature at some point!

Oh, Karin, please don't feel like that. I hope you find this to be one of the friendliest, as well as a really useful, learning resource for photography. If you have any questions at all about using ther forum, just call out. If you don't ask, you don't get the answer.

You seem to have got all that pretty good. The signature option becomes available after 5, or maybe it's 10, posts.

Hello Keith! Great to have you here. One of the best ways to start a war on here is to put up a question along the lines of 'Do you think Canon or Nikon is the best?'

I hope you enjoy being part of the forum.

Hello, my name is Ole and I live in Australia. My main interest is black and white but also anything that looks interesting. I want to learn but at the same time I wish to keep photography simple, that is to focus on the joys of photograpy.

Hi Ole, and welcome to CiC - and glad to see that you are already taking part in the forums. AS you will probably have gathered, there is a very wide range of interests here, and the key thing is that we all try to learn from each other and we do it in a friendly and constructive way.

I hope that you enjoy your time here. It would be good if you could update your profile with Ole and Australia - or whichever bit of OZ you are in. That way they will appear alongside all your posts. If you can't find how, this link should help.

    Editing your profile.....

    Dave

Hi, I am Prince M. I am from New Delhi, India and am pleased to join this forum. I am confident that this will help improve my photography skills. I love photography and would like to know more about it . I want to upgrade from point and shoot to DSLR. After some research on internet I have zeroed in on Sony Alfa 58. I want advise whether should I go for combo of 18-55mm + 55-200 vr kit or 18-135 single lens kit as a beginner. Thanks

And it is a pleasure to welcome you to the forum. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

One thing - You tell us in your post where you are from, but if you wish, you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

As to your question, I am of the view that one should start with one lens. Learn about its capabilities and what you can achieve with it. Once you feel you are able to make all the sort of images that you want with that one lens, then consider investment in another. What you lose by going for the one lens rather than the two lens option you refer to, is the 135-200mm range. I do not think you will necessarily experience that as a problem.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Greetings, I'm new too! My name is Chris and I live on the east coast of Australia.

I am relatively new to photography, having owned my DSLR for just over 2 years. During that time I have discovered that I am attracted to wildlife photography - especially birds. I purchased a couple of lenses to help me capture better shots of them after I realised that the 'kit' lenses that came with my camera had their limitations.

I have learned a lot in the last 2 years (having no prior experience), and hope to continue learning from the experience of others here at CiC.

As I'm allowed to upload one photo in this introductory thread, I have have decided to 'put my best foot forward' and to show the image that I am most pleased with so-far.

Several weeks ago, I was advised to watermark my photos. To me, the watermark gives my images a 'professional' look which I must say, is a false impression! I am just learning!

And so you should be. That is a beauty.

Great to have you here, Chris. I hope you enjoy it and find it useful.

That's one of those statements in photography that has started a thousand wars. For every person that thinks a watermark is a good idea, either for security, marketing or just to look good, there is one who think they just ruin an image and serve no purpose whatsoever. You've got to make your own choice.

I don't use one at all. For those who believe it's important for copyright purposes - It isn't. You still own copyright whether you say so on the image or not. For those who feel it deters some people from stealing your image, it may do for some, but getting rid of a watermark is easy - just get good with the cloning brush.

So, it's a debate that will never have an agreed conclusion.
