Hello Mick and welcome. As someone involved in fine art printing, I'm sure your views and opinions will be sought out on here.

As to your question. I'd suggest going into the Image Post Processing and Printing section of the forum, starting up a new thread and asking the question there. More people able to give a response will see it there. And I think I can be pretty sure that there will indeed be people with thoughts on the subject.

You don't say where you are. By the way - If you wish you can go to Edit Profile and put in your location, so that it appears in the sidebar alongside your message, just like mine beside this message. Then everybody knows where everybody else is.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hi I am a new member.
I'm in the market for a new camera...Nikon d5500 with a Tamron lens 16-300mm and don't know if I should get a tripod (light one) or a monopod. I had a Velbon tripod 15 years ago, it was nice but very heavy and long. I believe it came up to my waist when it was closed.
What do you think of a Pan-tilt vs Ball heads?

    Thanks
    Chris

Hi, I've been photographing with DSLRs since 2008 and found CiC while hunting the net for friendly direction and tutorials on improving my composition. I haven't got into post-processing in very great depth, and would like to know more about that, too, but most of all I want to learn how to get the best from my camera, develop my style and produce original images. Mary.

Hi Chris, and welcome to CiC.

There some very nice tripods around, and the carbon fibre ones are very light, but they come with a price tag to match. There have been quite a few tripod threads here, you could try using the search bar at the top of the screen. Otherwise, I suggest that you re-post your question in the "Digital Cameras and Equipment" forum where it will get a lot more views than here.

In the meantime, enjoy being a member, and I hope to see and hear more from you in the future.

    Hi Mary,

If you want to learn about things, you have come to the right place because learning and sharing is what CiC is all about. Probably the best way to get feedback on composition is to take some photos and post one or two in the appropriate forum (either "Nature and Architecture", or "People and Pets" - though no-one here is too fussed if you can't decide which). Ask for C&C, and see what happens. Folks here are always constructive and if they are not they soon get taken to task!

    Best wishes,

    Dave

Hello everyone, I'm Richard Jones a retired bush pilot and now full time painter/photographer. My photography activities go back to film, I was influenced by my older brother and used his darkroom at age 12 and thereafter to print my own B/W work.
I feel my film days produced my best work and have to confess I'm feeling very challenged by the digital age and kit. So much to learn, and is why I come here to get information and inspiration in a welcoming and friendly setting. I include my Flick URL

Hello everyone, my name is Jim and I live in Ontario Canada. I'm looking forward to exploring your website/forum and learning all I can. I've always had a passion for photography but never really taken the time to learn the art, until now. I recently purchased a Nikon D5300 with a stock 18-55mm lens. I also added a 35mm prime and 18-300mm zoom. Buying the equipment was the easy part, acquiring the skills to use it is the big challenge.

G'day, I live in Sydney, Australia and have just recently found this marvelous site. While I don't have a camera that has interchangeable lenses, I am still looking forward to learning (and sharing) as much as I can in the way of techniques for better photography skills. It looks to be a very caring and sharing community of photographers and I am hoping that I can contribute in a positive way to it in time

    Hello Richard and welcome.

There are rather a lot of members here who have made that transition - me included

I don't rate myself all that highly as a photographer - but I am sure I am getting better results with digital. For me, the main difference is the instant feedback on the screen of the camera. That and being to work in a "darkroom", in the light, and not up to my elbows in smelly chemicals.

You'll find lots of friendly support and encouragement here - look forward to seeing more of you. I bet you have a good few bush pilot tales to tell as well!

    Best regards,

    Dave

Hello Jim, and a warm welcome to CiC.

We are all about learning and sharing here, so just jump in, the water is fine! If you haven't already, do have a look at the tutorials. Even if you already know a lot, there's likely to be some good revision there.

As you say, learning to use the kit is the hard part, and then there is the whole new world of post processing on the computer. Some of us love it, and for others it's a necessary evil.

    Best wishes,

    Dave

    Hi there, and welcome.

Would you mind adding your "real name to your profile. It doesn't sound very friendly to call you Mr ISO100

As you look around, you'll see that there are many different kinds of camera gear in use - not just interchangeable lens cameras. One of the great things about photography today is that there are just so many really good cameras around. For just two or three hundred dollars, you can get a camera that would put to shame kit costing 1,000's a few years ago.

As you noticed, this is a friendly place, and we have a rule that there are NO dumb questions, so just get stuck in and I look forward to hearing more from you.

    Hello Chintu, and welcome.

Travelling and photography are a great, if sometimes expensive, combination! We are all about learning and sharing, so if learning is what you want, you have come to the right place.

Would you mind updating your profile to tell us where you are in the world. It's nice and friendly to know where everyone is, and it can be helpful if you are asking for advice.

    Best regards,

    Dave

    Hi everybody,
I was introduced to the technical articles on CiC a while ago when I did a BTEC course in photography in London.
Finally decided to join the community!
I live in rural Bedfordshire but only a few minutes off the M1.
I photograph for fun but hate taking snapshots. I enjoy street photography and spontaneous or candid portraits of people best.
If I don't get round to joining my local camera club I will post images on here for you all to critique!

Hi, My name is Pat. I signed up awhile ago but couldn't figure out how to post until now (at least I hope using the Reply Button is the correct way to do it.) Since I signed up I've had a bit of practice, mostly flowers and fungi and a few pets, all of which I chose because they sit still and don't mind if you have to re-do it 10 or 15 times to get it right. I'm retired and live on the WestCoast of Canada. I'd like to get into birds and people; the former seem much more approachable than the latter though.

Re: NEW MEMBER? please introduce yourself here

Hello my name is Elizabeth, user name Eawwms, I live in California USA - My photography experience is limited. I loved my old Nikon 2020 but for economy switched to a Nikon Coolpix P 500. I have not studied it enough to be any good.

I take photos of my garden to post on line, more importantly photo of insects that I want to id. The closeup on my p500 and I do not get along. This will be a question for another time "Any help for me?"

It was great to find your site when searching for a solution on what to do with an old portrait 1914 that was framed in an oval shape and dome glass. The photo has taken the shape of the dome glass. I need to make copies of it for other family members and I am not sure about what to do. Thank you for any help.

Welcome to CiC. It is a little odd calling you Mr. T because as an informal group we go on first name basis or a nickname you will want us to address you as. Please be kind enough to go to your PROFILES page (to of this page that says MY PROFILE. Please click on that...) and fill in the appropriate blanks such as your name or nickname and place where you are from. By your second posting, this information you gave here will not be remembered by any of us.

Hope you enjoy your stay with us...
