Hi everyone, my name is John and I live in Cumbria close to the Lake District National Park. I love landscape photography and am currently building a photographic record of the lakes, mountains and rivers of the region. I took up photography seriously a year ago after many years of point-and-shoot, and discovered that there is so much more to it than I imagined; and have only just managed to begin to take photographs I am happy with. I feel I need a lot of help from experienced photographers hence my reason for joining this great site. My main camera is a newly-acquired Nikon D7200 but my backup is a D5500. Hope to join in the forums asap.

What a fantastic project, in a fantastic part of England. I'm not too far away from you, in East Cheshire, tucked up against the edge of the Peak District, and I've certainly visited the Lake District many times.

Everyone here is still learning, it's a journey not a destination, so I'm sure you will fit right in. Ask any questions you want to - the only dumb ones are the ones we don't ask. Almost certainly the best way to improve is to post an image, say what you were trying to do (or what you are unhappy with) and ask for C&C. As I'm sure you will have already seen, we are a polite and constructive lot, from all over the world.

Hello, I'm Twan, from the Netherlands. I'm entirely new to DSLR photography. I'm a student in linguistics and have developed a passion for photography over the last three years, during which I've had great help from my late Nikon J3. My biggest passion is travel, and consequently I'm particularly interested in landscape photography (and night photography in picturesque eastern European towns!). I'm here to hone my skills and so far the tutorials on this website have been of great help; the functions of a DSLR are overwhelming! Aside from mastering fully my new DSLR, I particularly wish to learn more about processing RAW images. Five minutes tampering around in some software and I've already ended up with a nicer image than the preconfigured JPEG from my camera.

I can see that you already have a good thread going in the forums, which I hope is proving helpful. It's definitely a good idea to work your way through some of the tutorials on this site - they are said to be some of the best on the net.

Hi Danny, and a warm welcome to CiC. I can see you managed to post a link to your site, which is great. To be honest, you may not get a lot of traffic to your site. We do like to communicate, but we tend to do it more by sharing one, or just a few, images and asking for feedback. We are all in the business of trying to learn from each other. There are some excellent photographers here, some just beginning, and lots in between.

I hope to see and hear more from you.

Hi everyone. I'm Simon, from South Africa. I've dabbled with photography for most of my adult life, including a couple of years where I developed and printed my own negs and made some extraordinarily bad prints. The last decade or so, however, I've mostly just taken snapshots with my mobile phone or point-and-shoot cameras. Then I got a Canon 100D for Christmas, and in the last few months have been relearning about ISO and aperture and all that, and, gloriously, editing. This is a great site, with tons of interesting and useful information!

Hello all. I am Steve Schwartz. Professionally a scientist at Brookhaven National Laboratory USA doing atmospheric science. Right now we are doing a project on cloud photography at high resolution looking upwards. It is in conjunction with that that I am joining this forum, although I have been an avid reader of the topics pages at this site. I also do nature photography.

For our cloud photography work we use fujifilm finepix S1. This is a great camera in many respects. The effective focal length of 1200 mm makes it outstanding for our purposes.

I liked the camera so much I went out and bought one for my personal use. I go canoeing and shoot hand held from the canoe. Amazing image stabilization in this camera as well.

I am hoping to get into some technical discussions here, specifically about linearity of counts versus radiant intensity. Perhaps there is a technical subgroup here that I can address my questions to. We shoot raw; convert to tiff 16-bit.
