    Mini Competition #103

    Here's how it works ...

    - You good folks post images in the thread (please change your post title to a name for your picture)

    - When we get 10 images we will attach a voting poll

    - After 3 days the poll closes and the winner is declared!

    - If you would especially like some critique after the competition poll closes, please make it known in the post

    Too easy eh?

Limit of 1 image per post, and 2 image posts per person.

If there are already 10 in the current comp, please start a new thread in this forums

Visit the IHF saterday, old engines, agricultural machinery and tractors. This picture has it all; movement, polished copper, oil and primary colours.

    Go To Sea No More

Any comments on how I could have improved this image would be much appreciated.

Howard, my initial reaction is that the image is somewhat cluttered. Taking it from a different angle, where it is outlined against the sky or some other plain background would improve it a great deal. Or, if you have a suitable lens, using a large aperture and having the background much more blurred.

    Kit
    Thanks
I probably needed to do both.
I do not think I could have got an angle that would have placed the anchore end against the sky but I may have been able to move it away from the dark timber building.
I was using a zoom that I could only open up to f/5.6 from f/6.3 for the shot. I was concentrating too much on the crop and did not notice that the focal length was 44 mm so I could have swapped lenses and used a 50 mm f/1.4 to achieve a very similar angle but more background blur.
I hope his will all come with experience and advice.
I may try and retake this if I have the opportunity.

Can you just clarify the voting procedure for me.
Do we vote for as many as we like?
I noticed that in the results of the last mini the number of votes was several times the number of voters !!!
    Thanks

Yes. You can check as many boxes as you feel are worthy of your vote. The idea of these mini competitions was not so much about producing a winner as inviting people, who may not otherwise feel ready to post one image into the monthly challenge, to participate with an 'element' of competitiveness. It was all about encouraging people to explore and improve.

So 'votes' are not votes 'for' one image as opposed to others, but indicators of approval for the quality of the image.

Hi DFM - yep, as many as you like. Don't worry about the voting stats - they're always "weird".

It is a brave man who says "Don't worry about the voting stats" to a statistician!
    Thanks to you and Donald.

    Hi Howard,

Glad to hear that it's all sorted (and 66% of the 2.3% of the member base who read that also agree with me*) (plus a margin of error of +/- 200%!).

In my opinion the % that the system gives should be the percentage of the overall vote that an image attracts, but it seems to be the percentage of voters who voted for the image, which I guess is useful too, but it's the first one that seems more important to me

I never know whether having the option to multi-vote or to single vote makes it any easier. I'm always going "Ummm...#3, no...#7, no, wait, # 2."
