Light, Tough and waterproof

My son is a serious mountain climber and has his Ipad6 [ or something] but it doesn't have the reach of his Panasonic G3 and 45-200 lens ... it bulkier, heavier and he is afraid he will damage it [the G3] .. it has had one near miss he admits to

I spotted the Nikon Coolpix AW130 but he is concerned at the limited reach [ just 120mm ] though the weight 220g is attractive.

Has anyone advice for him about this model or others for the job .... being Nikon and after I saw what Izzie produced with a similar sensored [?] 16Mp camera is a point in its favor with me... but I have never seen one.

I would like to suggest a rugged 16Mp MFT camera to him but I don't think they are made

Have a look at the current Olympus Tough model. I think it is equivalent to the Coolpix AW130 but I haven't looked closely at the specs. In my business, where we employed gummy fingered rough outdoors-type guys I found that the Olympus was the only one that was able to withstand the treatment they dished out - dropping from heights, immersing in water, driving over with the 4WD, etc. Some of the other models died after one or two field trips but the Olympus is still going strong after several years.

You mentioned waterproof in the thread title but not in your son's activities. If the waterproof capabilities are not needed then perhaps you should consider something else. That particular camera is marketed for its underwater capabilities, seems most reviewers thought it failed for that aspect; so there might be something else on the market that'll meet your son's needs (you mentioned focal reach) that will also be waterproof; yet not capable of surviving below 100 feet of water.

I use a Fuji Finepix XP60 as my fishing camera. It is impervious to saltwater spray or even a good dunking in the brine. I use the camera to document the fish I or my companions catch and it is perfect for that. However, the IQ is not good enough IMO for much else than documenting the catch of the day.



BTW: Scott, who is holding the yellowfin tuna, had laughed at my Fuji Finepix because his Samsung cell phone took better pictures. However, he fell overboard with his cell phone in his pocket while gaffing a large tuna. Sadly, I had the last laugh.

Richard ... you can laugh at me too as I stood with one foot on his trailer sailer and the other on the jetty... and I had my cellphone in my pocket With my experience I should have known better but I am not as steady as I used to be.

sadly while I went to the camp store to pay launching fee he decided to rig the mast while she was afloat instead of on the trailer .. a combination of errors

I think 'waterproof' means water/snow resistant in his case ... the xp's seem a bit lighter with a little more reach.

I doubt if you would need one as with that Nikon 9900 you showed your initial play with looks like a great camera and with normal care and consideration should cover your needs both at personal and CiC levels of performance. I doubt if you plan to go where my crazy son goes, but then it is just his version of, as he puts it, what his crazy dad does
