    Slippery Rock Creek

So I know anyone south of here - especially those around Washington DC - will probably hate this post, but...

This past weekend, I was hoping for a couple inches of fresh snow from the storm that rolled through the east coast of the US. Despite my folks who live just an hour south of me getting 6 inches, and coworkers in the DC area reporting up to 28 inches, we got absolutely no snow at all!

But I really wanted a couple shots with fresh snow cover, so I processed this shot to have a bit of a look of fresh snow - particularly in the trees.

    Slippery Rock Creek

How did I do? If you'd like to see the original color version, stop by my blog (there I have it setup in such a way that you just mouseover the image to show the original, so it makes it really easy to compare).

Hi Bill I prefer the color version because the surface of the water and the trees on the right look kind of 'out of focus' in the B&W.

Doesn't look like snow covered trees. How did you process, perhaps add some film grain to the area.

    Pittsburgh eh?

    Where are you really from?

The Slippery Rock joins the Connoquenessing which runs into the Beaver before any of that water gets to Pittsburgh.

I like that version in your blog...very interesting. I have seen that kind of effect on either Adam or Robert Pooles' blog too. How did you do that? Can you please tell me...(us). I don't think it is easily done here at CiC...

Thanks for the input. I am not sure if I see any additional sharpness in the color version... so I'm not sure what effect is happening there.

Well, it definitely won't look exactly like snow covered trees, but I felt the effect was somewhat decent. I forget the exact settings I ended up using in Silver Efex.

    Brian,

Sounds like you're familiar with the area. Are you originally from Western PA?

Anyway, the photo was taken from the Eckert Bridge in McConnells Mill State Park.

Izzie, the effect is just some simple mouseover/mouseout calls. Unfortunately, yeah - I don't think it is something that works on the forum as you would actually have to write the html code to make it work. If you're interested in using it for your own website or something, feel free to send me a PM and I can explain more.

Yes, it is fairly easily done on a web site, but you're correct, the forum won't allow it.

Sean does use that mouse over/out technique in several of the tutorials.

Born and raised in Ellwood City until I decided that the USAF was a better choice than working in a mill. We used to go up to Ellport on our bikes to swim in the Slippery Rock. The Connequenessing ran through a deep gorge in town and 'crick' swimming was a lot easier up there.

BTW, you might like to look at Buttermilk Falls Park in Beaver County. It's small but interesting.
