    Hi Friso,

    This picture and the title you have given it made me ponder something - let me explain;

In the UK, we'd call that a 'Windmill' because it is driven by the wind and that power is normally used to mill wheat (in to flour).

We also have, or had, many 'Watermills' in the UK, where they were powered by water and also milled wheat.

I gather, from watching something on history of land reclamation in Holland, that what I'd call 'a Windmill', if seen in Holland, was usually a wind driven pump to pump out water from low level land.

Anyway, that's a good picture in nice light, perhaps because of my historical bent on these structures, part of me wishes all the modern paraphernalia were not present though (e.g. cars, street lamps, etc.) leaving just the mill, person walking dog and landscape.

    Cheers, Dave

    Re: The mill

    Hi Dave,
You are correct. It is a windmill, but here in Holland we call a windmill, watermill etc. a mill.
If you look at the UNESCO website: The Mill network of Kinderdijk. They are not talking about the Windmill network of Kinderdijk. And are also windmills.

I am not pleased with that care at the left side of the mill. But I am pleased with the photo. And yes there are a lot streetlights.

    Thanks for the comments.

I assume this was not taken at the Kinderdijk or have you taken it at an angle to avoid any other mills?

Frisco, I like your composition, the walker on the right side helps the balance.

Frisco...it is a beautiful scene. I like it. The 'modern' stuffs found along the wayside, electric poles, modern cars can be removed quite easily in Photoshop but we live in a modern world and this windmill was a leftover from the old era. Gotta accept that. The only nit I can find here is that light (electric) on the left side on top of the trees there which will clean this image because there is no pole to connect it to and like it is just hanging there... Good shot. I particularly like the post processing done in this -- and I must admit, I am very biased toward the reds and greens and orange in an image because I like those colours. Keep up the good work.

No this is not at Kinderdijk, this is on/at the city walls of Gorinchem.

Interesting looking structure. Nice lighting and a good sky which might reveal a bit more texture with some PP.

Beautiful light, Friso, I like your image very much.

The platform around the mill is slanted slightly down on the right. Of course, it may have been that way, but I wonder if it would look better straightened?

    Hi Dave,
Thanks for the comments. When I am going to straighten the platform of the mill, the road/dike on the right will not be straight anymore.
