Yes, I admit I got bored with waiting and upgraded in December after the November (?) release. No issues so far, and I do like it.

I enjoyed the screenshots of the different releases (follow the link at the end of the article). A trip down memory lane, to 3.1 for me.

If you have not been infected go to the control panel and select Windows Update. From there go to "Setings" and uncheck "Recommended Updates".

If you have been infected and are tech savvy, uninstall update KB 3035583 and then hide it so it doesn't show up again.

If you are not tech savvy, get and run GWX Control Panel and it will take care of getting rid of all that nasty stuff.

I wanted to wait for awhile, but it seems that it's on the way

Unfortunately, Windows 10 "broke" my computers, so I had to uninstall it as the "fixes" did not work. Some of the drivers were not compatible and some of the software I don't want to upgrade was broken. I'll go to Win 10 when I get a new computer, but not before.

Is your computer an old one Manfred? I replaced my laptop with a new one two years ago. Do you think I have the same risk?

I installed Windows 10 on a computer that is four years old and experienced no problems except that I needed help getting one very highly specialized and unimportant add-on software application to work.

The primary problem was my less than 18-month old ASUS laptop.

The way I have it set up is that the touch pad is disabled whenever I plug in my mouse or Wacom tablet. The functionality works fine under Win 8.1 but breaks under Win 10. The updated WIn 10 driver for the touch pad does not disable the touch pad, even though the documentation with the driver says it does.

Then there are some other issues that are software specific.

And this comes as a surprise? I'm fairly certain MS doesn't care that the 4-year old machine is Win 7 and the 18-month old machine is Win 8.1; both did not like the new OS. This is actually the first time I've had as many problems with an OS upgrade.

No surprise really. just this is the first time they have been this forceful.

Me too. As I noted in a different thread, I upgraded my laptop but several glitches resulted so I rolled everything back to Windows 7. My desktop is Windows 7 (and dual boot XP). I'm going to leave it as is or at least until Microsoft's end of life for Windows 7 and then it will be time to replace the desktop.

Thanks for that, Manfred. That update was indeed on both of my machines and I removed it and changed my update protocol to manual. I would/will be supremely perturbed if my machines get updated to Win10 without me specifically agreeing to do so. Not to mention simply burning up my data usage allowance to no end.

    Thanks for the heads-up, John!

I bought a new Dell recently and quite deliberately chose one with Win 7 Pro.

I just went and checked Windows Update and, sure enough, it was set to Automatic

    Not anymore, thanks to you

If you un-intall the Windows update indicated by Manfred, go back to check and make sure that it stays gone. I had to un-install it and restart the computer twice to make it go away. Sneaky rascals.

Re: Windows 10 - MicroSoft getting pushy.

Neighbour across the road asked Bill to sort out her laptop. Bill came back to tell me it has Windows 10, what do I think should he do? I said restore it back to Windows 7. It took him half a day to do it. Said neighbour is not really computer savvy and pressed the Windows 10 free update, hence the mistake. I think I will stick to Windows 7 until it is time to upgrade to a Mac.

Unfortunately, going Mac seems to be no better. I've been working with someone in another photography group I am on with a Mac issue (I've used both Windows and Macs for years). He had just upgraded to the latest OS upgrade and his external hard disk stopped working. The solution was to reinstall the old version of the OS.

Re: Windows 10 - MicroSoft getting pushy.

Thanks for that John. IMO that is very sneaky. Looks like a broader definition of a Windows update than, I assume, most people would expect. If I'm running Windows 7 I expect an update to be updating that OS, not downloading a different OS.

Have Microsoft found that even with the offer of a free update to Windows 10 they can't give it away, or not in enough numbers to make it look good, so they have gone for the, "Would you like Windows 10 for free?" "No", well never mind you are going to get it anyway", approach.

This is a pity because I think quite a few of Microsoft's products are very good. I liked Windows 3.11. Unlike many I found XP to be excellent and 7 is also very good, but I want to have the option of using an OS when I want to, even if it is free.

This was recommended to me by someone I trust, but I haven't tried it and can't vouch for it. Caveat emptor.

Dan - I can vouch for it and have run it on several of our family's computers. I recommended it in posting #3 above.
