Thread: More clouds

    More clouds

Another file from the archive, re-processed (well, one of these days it might be possible to get out with the camera again. Too dull, chilly and windy at present). I'm not sure about the white balance in this.

Same day on the Pembrokeshire coast as my earlier post. Canon 450D, Canon EF-S 17-85mm @ 20mm, F10

Veery nice composition indeed! Dave, I have not seen a cloud that comes out as good as this from the ground up. Did a nice job here...

    Re: More clouds

Looks fine to me. The WB seems OK in those white clouds, although I haven't actually taken a measurement.

Possibly, is the foreground appearing a little 'dull' possibly due to the lighting angle etc? And that is making it appear as though the colour might be slightly off?

Would carefully and selectively adding a bit more foreground highlight brightness overcome your worries?

Lovely image, the blue sky is a bit dominating though. Reducing the saturation of the blues just a little bit might help

    Hi Geoff,

    Thanks.

I originally processed this with "cloudy" WB, which I found too warm, now re-done with auto. The light angle could be the issue. Originally I think that the sky was too dark blue. I have actually used Photomatix here to merge 3 conversions of a single raw file, and then produced two versions of the subsequent merged file, one for the sky / clouds to keep noise out (with zero local contrast) and one for the foreground to have more texture. Perhaps I should have saturated the merged image used for the foreground a bit more. I like Photomatix but try to avoid an obvious "HDR look".

    Hi Binnur,

Thanks. You may be right about the saturation, though on my monitor it doesn't look bad. Also, the sky in this country can be a very intense shade of blue when conditions are right.

Intense blue sky in England? Ah, yes, I do remember that day last summer.

    Re: More clouds

As luck would have it, I had some fantastic weather in Pembrokeshire at the end of last September, (my photo was from 2010), the last really sunny weather I can recall. I think that the time since then has probably been the dullest I can remember. Climate change, I suppose.

Looks like I'm too late to the party Dave as I'm unable to see the image

I like that composition, Dave. It is not something that would have occurred to me.

    Hi Peter,

I'm a bit confused by your reply because the picture seems to be displaying O.K. still.

    Re: More clouds

    Thanks Greg,

I really wanted to capture the cloud. Most of the route along the coast here the field boundary wall cut off the view of the lower cloud but the field entrance allowed a view of that too and just added extra interest, so I framed that. The way that the vertical of the right hand fence post and the cloud edge coincide was, I think, a coincidence!
