    The Bridge

Actually this is 3 bridges. In the center at a low level is the lift bridge over the canal which feeds into the Hamilton Harbour. At a higher level are two bridges ( James N. Allan Skyway) each with 4 lanes of traffic crossing the Harbour allowing ships to access the Harbour without disturbing traffic.

This is a really tough one Joe. You are trying to photograph the bridges, but in order to get in the whole length, you end up with a tiny bridge that stretches the whole width of the image and a lot of water and sky that, most of which doesn't contribute to the image. A tight crop will likely leave you with a very low resolution image.

Two solutions that come to mind are shoot a pano to improve the overall image quality or just shoot part of the bridge. I ran into a similar situation on a road trip to the east coast a couple of years ago when I wanted to photograph the extremely long Confederation Bridge from Nova Scotia to PEI and the Hartland covered bridge in New Brunswick.

I don't want to hijack your thread with my images, but...

    Confederation Bridge 1

    The Bridge

    Confederation Bridge 2

    The Bridge

    Hartland NB Covered Bridge Pano

    The Bridge

Perhaps you might want to consider these options or even a combination of both techniques?

Manfred provided some good examples of alternative angles. It can be very effective to show long, linear objects from one end and disappearing into the distance. That POV can be very effective giving an impression of very long objects.

@Manfred, would you place them in another thread also? you placed them as instructive and suggestive; i want them in another as evaluative, where i can comment upon them

I've posted all of these images before in this forum, around the time I took them.

Thanks Manfred. First of all I love your Confederation Bridge 1 shot.
I have not had much success with pano shots. Perhaps I need more practice with the processing. WRT shooting part of the bridge: I will look at this and also look for a different POV for my shot. The problem with this bridge is that most of it is over land ( land fill) as it gains height to allow clearance for boats in the canal below. But I live close by and cross it frequently so I will look for another pov.

Given that issue, another approach would be to explore specific aspects of the bridge. Here's another technique you might want to consider:

    The Bridge

This is sort of down your way (the Blue Water Bridge, in Sarnia). It is also a twinned bridge like the James N. Allan Skyway (I remember when it was called the Burlington Bay Skyway) This was a grab shot as I walked back to the car after grabbing an ice cream, not far from the bridge.

I know that bridge and this is a beautiful composition of it. BTW, us Hamiltonians call the Bay "Hamilton Harbour, not Burlington Bay. I never understood why the bridge over Hamiton lHarbour was called Burlington Skyway? 🤔
