I agree about painful. I read a scientific journal that had an article about the injuries incurred by the Neanderthal hunters, probably by attacking large beasts. The injuries sustained were remarkably similar to those sustained by rodeo performers.

I was just wondering what happened when one falls on the ground and here you are with that shot. All beautiful action ones here. Now this makes me want to score a visit to Wyoming in the summer for the rodeo. A friend of mine used to be one champion rider. Thank you so much for all these shots. I have looked at these three times yesterday but lack of time on my part to log in as we were going out for my Project 52 assignment. I can't pick and choose which ones I like...they are all so good! ...

Well, the ground is actually turned dirt and rather soft. In fact, they bring a truck or tractor in to drag and level it every few riders in the barrel racing because the softer dirt gets kicked around down to the harder stuff. In the first sequence, it is presented in order and if you follow his body position you can see the rider is actually doing a kind of back/shoulder roll. It looks a lot worse than it is.

You can see that it is pretty loose here


and the track of the pickup that did the dragging can be seen in front of the horses front legs.
