On1 and PSD "smart picture"

After basic PP of the RAW in Lightroom (LR5.2) and export as JPEG before it, I use from time to time On1 (now 10.1) to boost pictures (on my opinion, till now, On1 is not giving good results when working directly on RAW) or use their eraser, clone tool, etc (I don't have Photoshop). If I save the picture as PSD (like the "smart PSD" version) I get a huge file aroud 500 MB or even more It filled quickly my Hard disk and I got in trouble before I understood why (at first I didn't notice the files size...). Is there someone that can tell me if he/she experienced this problem? It seems to me that I have to avoid the PSD format and stick to JPEg only in these cases, but is the quality the same? Or is there another solution to keep saving as PSD without this huge file size? As you can understand from my question, I'm nor an advanced tech photograph

I think that's the way it is. As I am sure you realise, the "smart" psd is there for maximum re-editability - so may be discriminating when you decide to use it?

Simple solution. Get a larger hard drive. I don't use OnOne anymore, but frankly the way I edit, I create 2GB files quite often. Storage is reasonably inexpensive.

Is there no way to save as .tiff instead? This will preserve layer info but you will lose editing history etc, not an issue if you are happy with the edits you have done. I've not used onone so not sure of its capabilities.

Yes, there are other options - you can also save as a "regular" psd. The "smart" version is On1's equivalent of Smart Layers, so far as I understand.

- Indeed, meanwhile I bought an external driver of 1Tb for photos only.

-I perhaps have to abandon the "smart PSD" option. Is PSD quality better than JPEG, except for the layer preservation? The final purpose of my PP is generally to enhance my prefered pictures for printing an enlargement (I like canvas, I hope you won't laugh at me...) or a paper album.

The Smart PSD is designed to allow you to return to Lightroom after editing in Photoshop (or in this case On1) and make further adjustments to the RAW processing (which is not possible with a normal PSD or a TIFF). However, it does this by saving a version of the RAW file in the Smart PSD, hence the massive file size. It is basically a RAW+a PSD+any layers all in one file.

If you open On1 from inside LR it will ask you whether you want to create a "smart" or "normal" image. Just pick normal and the resultant file will be much smaller. PSD files are still much larger than jpeg but slightly smaller than TIFF. If you aren't concerned about keeping your edits, another thing you can do to reduce PSD file size it so flatten the layers in On1 prior to saving.
