This has been an interesting task. Thanks for the help Mike.
I guess now I'll start to dig in and see how my different camera-lens combos all handle the same scene by comparing histograms.
    This could get interesting...

When you change equipment, the fundamental shape of the histogram should remain the same even though the exact details will be different.

I'd recommend the 24-105mm L IS, you'll just need to upgrade to a Canon to use it.

A single lens seems to be an awfully silly reason to change brands. Not a particularly helpful reply to this question. Nikon has a well regarded 24-120mm lens. I shoot the 24-70mm which is superb.

My boss at Ruston's in Lincoln used to say "just" whenever he wanted us to change the design that we were presenting for approval . . .

"OK, but can't we 'just' [something outrageous]".

The word "just" made the task easy in his mind . . .

. . . the adverb "only" works for many users of it, in a similar fashion . . .

Thanks for explaining: speaking only for myself, it was not obvious.

I did not find it funny. In fact, I thought that suggesting to a Nikonian to "just upgrade to a Canon" was rather unhelpful and provocative. I am glad it didn't start a Nikon vs Canon debate but it derailed what was an interesting and useful thread. Still not laughing.

Re: Lens recommendation for Nikon D7100

I used to shoot Nikon and Canon together in the simpler days of film. When I went to digital I chose to do so on a lens that I really liked for my own purposes. Once one has invested in a brand it is difficult to switch unless one has a large amount of disposable income.

Nikon and Canon are both fabulous brands, they may have differences in their technical make-up both for bodies and lenses but they both get my respect in buckets. I love many features of Nikon gear, but I am now heavily invested in Canon.

Perhaps because I so respect both (and other) brands I find it difficult to engage in the debate that goes on between which is better. If we were to sit down with the images of both brands and not know where they came from I wonder if we could tell the difference. VERY few of us are really constrained by the technical limitations of our gear, I freely admit that the weakest link in the image-taking chain is me, and if we are honest I bet that is true for almost anyone.

The last thing I want to do is pour petrol on a fire, but let me say that if we all feel confident in our choice of brand then whatever others say should not become an issue for us. It looks like this is joke gone badly wrong, but probably with no mal-intent.

Re: Lens recommendation for Nikon D7100

    Hi Jenny,

If the original joke post had just/only had a smilie at the end of the line, a lot of people would have 'got it' far sooner (for future reference).

    e.g.
    colon D
    colon right bracket
    semi-colon right bracket
    or even "LOL"

Let's all stop going round this particular loop now please.
On topic posts welcome to the OP question.
    Cheers, Dave
