Is this "street photography"?

We went out yesterday to get some bandages at the pharmacy and a few other errands to complete my prop shopping for next week's Project 52. Bill went out for some groceries and I stayed in the car and these are two of my shots in my baby camera...

1 snow on the hood and elsewhere



2 street corner crossing



whatever else...yes, it as a darn miserable day but I need to go out to take a breather ...and that blur at the top right hand corner I tried to remove but I made a mess of it -- those three blobs are snow on my side of the window.

For C&C...'would be nice to hear from you...

I'd say both are examples of street photography, doesn't always have to have a human included, sometimes funny signs, items left by well wishers are just as interesting as the people shots. I like the first, the second is just a reminder of why I'm inside.

Just answer your question. My answer is no. for me street photography must show some interaction between the human and his environment. I miss that. I miss the human part.
This counts also for a lot of pictures of portraits made in the street. Though made in the street they don't qualify as street photography for me. There I miss the environment.

It's 76* and climbing here now at 9:03 in the morning. We'll crack 80* before the half hour I'm sure.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if you label a pic as being of a particular genre or not.

However, just for completeness, I wouldn't call either of these 'street photography'. I'd call the second one a city/townscape (and a good one as well, by the way - I'd crop a little off the bottom).

If you want 'street photography' - these probably aren't, but they are street photography. And a great lesson to us to use opportunities as you see and get them - well done Izzie.

Also, in the second, if you crop to 4*5 you may be able to lose your blobs without unbalancing the image

I don't think people are necessarily needed to qualify as "street photography", wouldn't a scene of a ghost town or deserted street still represent a viable scene as well as the actions of humans?

I wouldn't bother too much about genre definitions, afterall genres constantly evolve into new and different genres. These two shots were taken in the street, so they are "street photography". They present a certain aspect of life on the street at this particular time. (And there are people inside the cars in the 2nd shot).

#1 probably should have the badge in sharp focus (perhaps camera movement due to your shivering, Izzie?)

#2 maybe a bit tight on the left side, cramping that car, but a good shot of a snowy street for me (never having been in snow).

I agree, the human element is obvious whether he/she is present in the scene or not. I know that not all hold this opinion, but for me that's OK and part of what makes SP so interesting.

The important thing, Izzie, is to get out and shoot. Call it whatever you want; just have fun.

FWIW Izzie, that particular snowfall is what we have now and...it's the most we've had all season.

If there's no folk in the photo, it's architecture. Izzie's first photo is car photography......IMO...

If you're taking a vote on definitions - my vote is: No, neither is, mainly because of lack of Human content - arguably the second has a driver of the car camera left, but that content is not a major Subject and the human does not have even a minor impact on the image.

The second one is quite interesting. If you want a genre then "Cityscape" or as a subset of "Landscape", then "Landscape"

Maybe consider making it bleaker and more high key. Have a play with cropping. The tree, though a nice "frame" and it is often good for a Landscape to have a nice foreground frame - but in this bleak Urban scene the tree is kind of a distraction to my eye.

I like that 1/60th second Shutter Speed captures the snow falling - but the car's movement in a blur is a little off putting - not too much though - not sure about the car adding any relevance - maybe you should have waited until it passed through the intersection.

Here is a rough of what I see -



Cropped 15:7
Selective and various slight de-saturations of: green; yellow; red; and blue
Slight increase to highlights
Move grey point to make higher key, overall

Why, is your truck/car/automobile parked outside the house? Thanks John...I am just wondering about the kind I submitted here if it follows a genre of anything but environment shot. Actually my folder is titled "Snow" and then the month and year.

California is always a nice place to live. I've lived in San Diego in the late 80's and I enjoyed the weather more, especially when we took an RV tour towards the Wyoming area one winter and never want to go back there again in any winter months which is more than I can actually grin and bear. Other seasons, Wyoming is a beautiful place, but I preferred the warmth of San Diego and the the beauty of the place.The thing that broke the camel's back for me was the taxes. We have to move out and did.

Exactly as I thought -- it was taken of the street though I was inside the car. I have been wanting to take a shot of crazy snow falling but this is almost blizzard-look-alike when I processed it in Nik's. Then I realized that this is one that qualifies for that kind of processing...in reality it is just one of those 'normal' snow falls of the season we experience. I like the fact that the leaveless tree was there to frame it.

No, this was when Roxie was bugging me for a treat. She was as bored as I was. But I only have one shot of this and I thought 'snow' to 'dodge'? hmm...nice combination but Roxie has other ideas...I tried to right the wrong but this is the best I can do. I just like the idea at the time...

Sorry...that was it! It was quick shot when I saw the car to get the movement, but the camera is a P&S and I have (but I don't know how...) no control of the shutter speed as I haven't learned the manual yet. I just thought this will be my bag camera for quickie shots. And since the mode is in Auto, this was almost as is, not much processing apart from that effect from Nik's. I can't recall if it is high key or low key. The camera doesn't have a RAW feature so all it can give me is the jpg format. For a quickie camera, it is handy though..
