    The lonely vet.

As I walked out on the pier in Cape Coral Florida I came upon this elderly gentleman sitting on a bench displaying various toys he had made. He had a bag at his side filled with wooden toys and magic tricks. First I thought he was selling them but after a brief conversation I realized he was not a seller, just a WWII vet who likes to sit in the sun on the pier and chat with anyone who would listen. It seemed the hand made toys were a way to catch peoples attention so they might stop and chat with him. He had a very strong southern accent softly spoken and seemed somewhat lonely in his demeanor. I talked with him for awhile then asked if I could take his picture. He was happy to oblige.

Wish I hadn't cut of his feet but I only had my 70-300 lens and every time I backed off far enough to take his full image people would get in between so I had to move closer.

Must be an Australian thing, that was what I first though too... & I was expecting it as apparently Vets, of the kind we thought of have a very high depression rate, in a job that people would think would be a happy one.

Griddi, look in his hands in both images. The rest were in the dark vinyl bag from which he took them out one at a time.

That generation is nearly gone. Thanks for taking some time with him. I'm sure he appreciated it as do I. We all owe them an immeasurable debt.

    Not just Australian. Me too.

I think the second of the above images reaches inside the man in a way, I feel, that the first one doesn't.

Me too I did not think of a veteran but a veterinarian. He must be living alone and has no one to talk to during the day so he has to invent something to make people noticed him and talk to him. Thank you for people like you who understand...and give him your time.
