Last hour of a Tet celebration

I was busy with my dog rescue work but, managed to stop off at a local Vietnamese Tet Celebration to catch the last hour or so of the festivities. There wasn't much happening but I managed to snare a few images...

The bright yellow and red banner to the rear of this lovely lady is a large Republic of Vietnam Flag.

A nice selection of closeup shots, Richard. I did notice that you cut off your head in the reflection off the sun glasses in #5.

Do you have any wider shots that give a broader view of the celebrations? That would really help in the context of the other shots.

Richard, for the few you managed to snare, you did a wonderful job.
Looks like a very colorful celebration.

The celebration looked more like an American county fair than anything intrinsically Vietnamese, so I did not shoot much background stuff. I was disappointed at the lack of the Vietnamese national dress among the crowd. Perhaps that was because of the late hour...

There were, of course, some Republic of Vietnam patriotic displays...

A good hours worth Richard and you've handled the contrasty light well also.

    Thanks...

I am not as happy as I could be with what I achieved. I had to make a home inspection for one of our rescue dog's adoption and the trip was a bit distant. Along the way, I stopped off at the Chinese New Year Celebration in Downtown San Diego. This was a larger celebration with more events to photograph. No public parking was available and the private parking lot I stopped at charged $25 USD at a minimum. That was just too pricey for parking. I knew that the smaller Tet celebration was going on so I arrived there, on my way home, about four pm and the celebration it ended at five pm and many stalls were already packing up.

I used my "oldie-but-goodie", Canon 420EX on a Stroboframe Camera-Flip Bracket for fill flash to help overcome the contrasty light. Even though I have newer flashes like the 600EX-RT, I will use the 420EX for walk-around shooting on a bracket because the 420EX is relatively small and light in weight...

I shoot in aperture priority and use between ISO 160 and ISO 640, changing that ISO depending on the light on my subject. I modify the f/stop and shutter speed depending on the type of shot. I always have the flash in HSS.

I was wearing my Vietnam ball cap to the celebration...

A young Vietnamese-American came up to me at the celebration, accompanied by an older man. The young fellow said. "My grandfather is ashamed of his English but he would like to thank you for fighting for his country." You should have seen the old man's face when I answered him in Vietnamese. "Thank you sir. My name is Richard, what is your name?" Funny thing is that this is about half of my entire Vietnamese language memory. Of course, the old man didn't know that!

BTW: for those of you who don't know, I was a combat cameraman in Vietnam and spent about 26 months in-country.

Richard -- I like the image in #1 -- the expression of those two are priceless; and #4 -- is a beautiful full lady all around. I hope she stays like that and not go the thin way...
