    Another vendor at the market

Back to the market, another sale and another posed image.

This stall was a small dark one deep in the bowels of the market building, so the lighting was terrible.

Good composition Manfred...I was trying to recognize what he was selling. Was that ginger too at the right side or is that different altogether? I think you are making it a habit buying then asking to shoot the vendor kind of thing...news goes around very quickly in those kind of environment. By the time you got to this gentleman, words had been out that "I hope that photographer buy from me next...I do not have to give him change and he takes my picture..."

I like the framing of this shot Manfred - his wares make a great background, and that giant pile of ginger on the right looks very interesting on its own! What did you do for lighting? Looking at the specular highlight on his forehead it looks like a large source up high. Would a flash be possible, off camera right would work really well? I realise the shot is done, but as an academic discussion, I'm curious as to how you would like to light the scene.

It's an existing light shop (at ISO 6400, so the shot is noisy, in spite of the noise reduction). This stall is well inside the market so the specular highlight is from a single CF light hanging in the hallway near the booth. There are a few dim skylights (that would work a lot better if they were cleaned on occasion).

I believe you are probably referring to turmeric root at the back, right hand side of the image. The ginger is on the left hand side of the shot. In India, people grind their own spices and probably go through more of the stuff in a week than we would use in a year.

It doesn't bother us if I get known as taking pictures of the vendors. We only buy if they have what we want and are not trying to totally rip us off.

Manfred, the lighting must have been terrible, it is bouncing off the gentleman's forehead. I guess that sometimes you just have to take what is offered or miss the shot altogether. I'm glad you didn't.
    Cheers Ole

Wonderful image Manfred. Even the color of the shirt he decided to wear that morning makes the image that much better. The array of smells in that market must be remarkable.

I saw the ginger on the left but I have not seen fresh turmeric before so I wasn't sure...Thanks for the info.
