    Mysore Palace

Mysore Palace is the home of the Maharajah of Mysore, the traditional ruler of Mysore. He and his family still live in about 40% of the palace, while the rest is a museum run by the government. The Maharajah ruled until India became a republic in 1947. We were told it is the second most visited building in India, after the Taj Mahal.

Mid-afternoon is never a great time to photograph, on a sunny day, but that didn't stop me from trying....

Very nice Manfred, vibrant colours and love the foliage in the foreground.

Is the building leaning slightly to the right though?

Matt - you could be right, but I don't know. I am working on a laptop, so screen size is working against me.

I dropped vertical rulers on a number of the verticals on the image as guides to help me when I straighten out the verticals and so far as I can tell, they seem to be bang on.

Nicely composed image with the included foreground. Instead of leaning I think there is a bit of vertical distortion by the slight outward projection at the edges of the frame. Just my $0.02.

I checked the verticals in the lightbox view and they are vertical. There is an amazing amount of detail visible. It's a very impressive looking building and picture...

It looks as though the picture was taken with a polarising filter and the colours have a bright but light weight feel about them to me. It would be interesting to see the picture taken in the morning when both sides of the building are unshaded (if I understand the orientation correctly). The light would be different but it could be less interesting without the shaded side.

Very nice, Manfred! I like the lot quite a lot, especially considering that we travelers (as opposed to travel photographers) rarely have the chance capture scenery in the best light. The light shows the lines in the building and the shape of the round formations on top.

Possibly, but this shot was taken with a Panasonic GX7, which as embedded lens profile information that ACR / Lightroom apply to the image. So far as I can can tell, other than with some very wide angle settings, the distortion is pretty well controlled. This shot was taken at a focal length of 32mm which is FF equivalent of 64mm; that's hardly wide angle.

As I wrote previously, when I get home, I'll look at it on the large screen to see, but suspect that it might be an optical illusion.

No polarizer, Tony. I used Nik Color Efex Pro's Pro Contrast filter, and that really gave the sky some "pop". The right face of the building is in shade, so I did a fair bit of dodging to bring the brightness down, left to right.

Thanks Mike - I have very little gear along for this trip, so I'm making due the best I can. I've got a few decent shots, but if I come back here again, I hope I have a bit more room in my luggage for the big camera, lenses, etc.

When traveling, we often cannot be choosers of what time of day to shoot which image. Nicely done however, despite the harsh overhead light...

Given the conditions under which you had to capture this image (i.e. time of day), what this now does is demonstrate that thing about the great images being made by the person behind he camera, not by the camera.

Impressive shot. Far from being any sort of expert, one of the aspects that impressed me is how detailed the photo is given you used a 16 MP camera. I though for sure you had used your N-D800. Thanks for sharing. Perhaps you will be able to post some interior shots too.

Very nice and sharp image, Manfred. I really like this one for all the decorations and colours and even the foreground.

One I get home, I am going to reprocess these shots in front of a decent sized (and performing screen) as well as the full set of tools. The sky and grass need to be toned back a bit, but doing selections with a mouse on a small screen isn't easy.

I use I use Nik Pro Contrast in many of my images. It does a much better job than the standard Photoshop filters. I will often throw control points in or manually mask things in or out, but not with these quick "on the road" edits.

The Panasonic GX7 with the 14-140 lens is what I've used on all the shots I've posted so far. This setup weighs just over 1 kg / around 1.5 lbs. I have polarizers along, as well as a tripod and the 100 - 300mm lens. I haven't used any of that gear so far (other than the second lens), but expect to within the next week.

The Pany performs well in good light, but once you hit ISO 800, the images become noisier. The lens itself is not blazingly fast, so again in good light at f/8 - f/11, good performance.

Beautiful image with vibrant color...did you work separately on the sky...i see something like a halo around the left end of the castle.... except that it is an awesome image....
PS: India became independent on 15th August, 1947; but with a written constitution of its own, it became a Sovereign Republic on 26th January 1950. Thus August 15th and January 26th are Public Holidays in India
