When shopping for an L lens. Consider the prime EF 200mm f2.8. It's way cheaper than the 300 or 400. The reviews I read by some people say it is much sharper than the zooms (i.e. 70-200 and 100-400). It doesn't have the image stabilization (IS) but because it's a fast lens (2.8), you can use faster shutter speeds to avoid shake. I just purchased one (pick up Friday). If you want, I'll let you know how it its. It is also compatible with both the 1.4 and 2.0 TC.

Trust me, you're not the first ... or even in the first million ... to make that mistake (and that's just this week!)

The problem with primes is that they only cover 1 focal length

The "primes being sharper than zooms" debate used to be true both in theory & in practice, but now it's more "in theory" only; in reality lenses like the EF 70-200 F2.8L IS USM II both with and without a teleconverter are razor sharp ... yes, lenses like my EF135/F2L & EF85/1.2L are sharper, but it's not a difference that translates into a real world image when viewed at real world sizes, and in reality I tend to use my primes more for specialist applications (eg EF14/2.8L when I need every bit of angle, EF85/1.2L & EF135/2L in the studio when I'm shooting fixed camera-to-subject distances for head & shoulders or 3/4, and the TS-E-90 when doing product shots, where perspective correction is required). Other than that it's VERY hard to beat the versatility of zooms.

Tried the EF 200 prime. Need the versatility of the zoom for indoor sports. Like you said in another post. The IQ (even with TC's) won't suffer with the EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS USM II. I sent the prime back and ordered the zoom. My wife's not totally happy with it but I am.

That reminds me of an iPad 2 story I heard the other day ...
