    An apology to forum members

In the course of a discussion on the needs of a member I became frustrated with a post from an individual. In the heat of the moment I responded publicly to this and, having considered that matter, I have decided that the public forum was an inappropriate medium to display my frustration - I should have done that in a private post.

Consequently, and again without pressure to do so, I wish to apologize to the forum members for such a public outburst. I value the positive environment of CIC, and would not want to be a part of having it descend into the negativity of some other photographic forums.

It would (should) be obvious that it was a post written by myself with which Trev became frustrated and subsequently showed that frustration.

I am very appreciative that Trev has made the statement and the apology above. I hold CiC in high esteem and Trev’s post above is one MAJOR indicative of the reasons why I so do: because any forum and the worth of it is merely defined by the worth of its constituents.

Earlier today, (my time), by PM, I invited Trev to contact me by email should he wish to discuss outstanding matters with a view to the resolution of any issues that we each might have. That invitation still stands. But also I mentioned in my PM that if we choose to leave matters as they rest, then that is also fine by me and I shall make inference, whatever happens.

Speaking only for myself, I think that if we each (Trev and I) do discuss openly and honestly what went down yesterday we will find that in the main there were several misunderstandings of the MEANING and NUANCE and TONE and TIMBRE of the written word and an overall misunderstanding of each others' general writing style: which likely would never have happened if we were discussing matters face to face, no matter how passionately we held our views or how robust was the discussion.

I also think that a few contributions on that particular thread, from one other another particular member, raised emotions generally and placed the whole conversation on a precipice over which it finally tumbled.

That was yesterday: today is today and we all move forward.

It's just my approach, but my feeling is that if whatever it is that shouldn't be written publicly, it also shouldn't be written privately. If anyone is so frustrated that the frustration shouldn't be displayed publicly, it also shouldn't be displayed privately.

That explains why in all of the years I've participated in Internet discussions, I've never tried to resolve anything privately. If it can't be resolved publicly, it's not worth resolving privately in my mind because it gives neither of the two parties the open, transparent discussion both deserve.

Good one, Trev and William...After all, we are only human...we cannot afford to lose sleep over a trivial matter no matter how important you think of it at the time. Time to move on and be pleasant to one another again...

    Oh well we'll see.

It appears to me, based upon our PM exchange, that Trev and I are very close to resolving everything - and that will have been achieved in a very open and quite frank manner, between the two of us.

Not being a Canon user (Nikon with vastly superior low light performance..... oops I digress) I did not follow the thread. Out of curiosity I have just read it. In common with other contentious threads the "combatants" tend to concentrate on the differences in opinions or are just ranking the points they are making as being far more important than other valid points. In many cases a disagreement arises simply because of a failure to carefully read and understand what has been written or to recognise that a post has just been poorly written. It is of course not helpful if personal preference is so strong that factual information is ignored.

A rule I have tried to adopt is to slow down and not shoot from the hip especially if I feel under attack or irritated.

Anyway just about every argument we have regarding equipment will be out of date in 6 months so why get all hot and bothered ....
