I don't know anything about cars, so I need to ask if some of those ornaments were actually radiator caps or were all of them only hood ornaments?

I guess some of the earlier models had their radiator caps on the outside of the hood.

Nice collection. Is that a concourse show?

Only the last one would be classed as a hood ornament, the others are all radiator caps as well as ornaments.

These were taken at the 2009 Pebble Beach Tour show which is held in Carmel prior to the big concours show on Sunday on the golf course. It lets the common folk get up close and personal with the cars.

Interesting to know that hood ornaments aren't allowed anymore in most countries, fear that a pedestrian will be injured if hit. I was reading that collapsible versions are allowed though. If I'm ever hanging onto a hood while the vehicle is traveling at a high rate of speed; I want a sturdy hood ornament to hold onto.

I have never heard that and I am an old car guy. my 1990 dodge diesel has a factory hood ornament. I think somebody made that up there is a lot of that out there.

It is 'a'gin the law' here in NZ unless it will collapse on impact.
A very interesting collection of shots taken in difficult conditions I suspect

Agreed. Rolls flying angel is designed to withdraw into the hood as per the attached youtube video:

Mercedes have done something similar with their three pointed star. Let's face it at any speed one of those protruding things would slice and dice...

Good series Alan, I didn't realise there was so much variety.

With regard to retraction, that also helps avoid theft.

I suspect that these kind of classic cars may be exempt from the rules, either that or their owners remove them (replacing with a plain cap) for transiting to and from shows (if not on trailer).

beautiful. but style was needed because they needed to be filled up so often raising the hood was a bother

Beautiful series, Alan. Peeble Beach is a very upmarket place. The MBCA and the Jaguar car clubs occasionally hold their car shows there. I've only been there once and the place is overwhelming.

    Thanks all.
As you can see from the backgrounds, there wasn't much of a chance to get a picture of the whole car with all the people so I got what I could.
Since these cars were made long before the laws came along I think they're grandfathered in.
I highly recommend going to the Car Week they hold every August as there are all kinds of cars running around.

I can usually shoot around the spectators, it's the cars parked closely together that sometimes hinder my shots.

John - That year it was crazy packed with spectators.
Here's a shot of the cars as they come in from the Tour that they have to participate in if they want a chance at Best in Show.
They're making a left turn to go down the main drag in Carmel where they're parking them for lunch. The street was wall to wall people after all of them arrived.

I doubt if even a selfie stick would help here.
