Bowknot Bend

[Loose Canon]

Imagine half of a bowtie. Including the knot. With a river running around the perimeter of the half bow and knot.

One morning at the knot, I climbed up about 2500 feet from the river. It was pretty much straight up and straight down the other side from the top, again to the river on the other side. The total lateral distance was 1500 feet from the river on one side to the river on the other side. The top of the knot was about 15 feet wide. Took about an hour up and about 45 minutes to get back down.

Took in the view, shot some photos, and was generally in awe of the scenery around me.

Back down to the boats at the river. We paddled seven miles by river around the bow to get back to the other side. It took us most of a day to paddle around the bow to see what we could see with an hour’s climb at the “knot” earlier that morning. It is basically a seven mile right turn.

I think that for those of us who haven't experienced such places, it can be hard to get a sense of the huge scale of them. My jaw did drop a little when you said 2500 feet... I hope to see this for myself one day.

It is hard to get your head around the scale even when you are in there. Until you get something to compare. Or until you start to climb!

I didn't think 2500 feet was accurate, but that is what the topo map elevation said. It sure felt like it at the top, though!
