Still getting to the few pics that I thought were worth working with from my recent trip to Kuala Lumpur.


The juxtaposition of the national war memorial with the 'new' Kuala Lumpur rising in front of it made me think of the title immediately.


With something like this it is about trying to get that 'different' angle on the narrative in the pic. I was pleased that I 'saw' this image as I did. It was one of those whereby I very clearly saw the finished image as I composed and captured the photograph. A departure from my usual 1:1 format, to the 16:9 ratio was very easy to see at the time of composing the picture.

Nice Donald, the composition works well for me - something in me wants to have more detail in the statue base - the figures are fine and the trees etc are fine but the base -hmmm, I think its because the paving is light directly under it. I totally get the title and kudos for seeing it and capturing it as you saw it, no mean feat.

I wonder if there is a little too much of that solid black area in the bottom left corner which is tending to distract from the main subject?

As it stands, my first thought viewing this was 'why is it so far away?'

At the risk of contradicting your 'before shot' vision, I don't see the trees either side contributing to the stated aim of the image and feel that rather than 16:9, a more conventional 3:2 or 7:5 ratio would give more emphasis to the subjects. In fact; I would crop at 'whatever ratio it is' by taking those inner lighter coloured plinth edges in to the corners, which maintains the 'leading lines' benefit that your current lower corners do.

No. The comments that have been made here and via PMs received have caused me to reappraise this and those of you that have questioned the composition are, I believe, correct.

Right now the Rugby Union match between Wales and France on TV is consuming my attention. Thereafter, I will look at this image again.

You mean Rugby is more important than looking at this shot again? j...k... Honestly, I like this shot. Reminds me of those kind of statues that is prevalent here in the US revering our fallen soldiers. I love the composition. The part of the pavement on each side balances the shot, the city buildings and skyline in the background forms the whole shot to separate from the base. This is a well thought of shot.
