    Tay Bridge

There were lots of (domestic) things I should have been doing today. But the early morning light was so good, I decided that they could wait and, instead, got the camera gear into the car and off I went.

The Tay Bridge has been a favourite subject over the years. Had a notion that the light this morning would have given the chance for a great image. I was right.

Whether I did it justice or not is for others to judge! Comments welcomed.

Donald, another great bridge photo. I recall seeing one you posted a year or so ago of a different bridge, or at least shot from a very different location. Are you using your full frame camera mostly or your 7dii? (I'm on an iPad so can't see the EXIF.)

Thank you, Bruce. This was the Canon 5DS with the 24-70 f2.8L on board. I also had the 5-stop and Vari ND (at max setting) filters loaded. So this was with 13 stops of filter in place to slow down the shutter speed.

That is a really nice image Donald. I was curious about the structure and in looking at Wikipedia I saw a photo from some distance back. It shows a church tower close to the sweep of the bridge - it would be great to get a shot of the curve of the bridge from up there!

I know. There are a number of locations for making images of the bridge (many of which have been used by other photographers). It is such an iconic landmark in this part of the world.

    Hi Donald,

Like you, one of my favourite subjects. Been taking photos of the bridge since ah was a wee boy.

Its one of those deceptively simple images that are very easy on the eye. The longer you look the more you see and appreciate the detail and complexity of it. Very well done indeed.

This is a lovely image, as was your last one of the bridge, which I did not comment on.

It brings back fond memories of the six months I spent in Dundee some decades ago. I stayed in some student accommodation next to the botanic gardens overlooking the airstrip and bridge.

Wonderful composition and transitional changes of tonality!

Consider eliminating the very small, dark thing at the bottom of the frame near the right side. It seems to be solid material rather than water.

Damn. I thought I'd cut all of that out. Your eyesight is too good, Mr Buckley!

    Donald,

I am always intrigued by an image that appears to be of a simplistic nature but at the same time commands me, as the viewer, to keep looking at it. This is such an image and I love it.

Nicely done, Donald. I can't fully appreciate B/W but the image is well composed and I like the look of the water.

Beautiful. I enjoy the way the sky and the water play off against each other.

A nice study of the bridge, Donald. Simplification is one of the most important compositional techniques and this image demonstrates why this is the case and why it works so well.

The more and more experienced I get at photography, the more I realise and appreciate how true this is. Of the images that I think are my very best, simplification such as this is a key element in the composition.

Was it just me or didn't anyone see that blob at the top of the left hand corner? Or was it the sun starting to take a peek at that corner? Very nice rendition in Black and white. Another good image, Donald.

It is you - I didn't see it, but now I do - so whatever you have must be contagious Izzie

Good composition Donald, as we'd expect.
