Tay Bridge 2

As an aside, why don't folk on this forum respond tae a thread by posting their own images in that thread...e.g. this one on the Tay Bridge.It seems logical tae me that Donald posts a photo of the bridge, then others respond with comments and their own images as well ( in that thread).

Every other site ah use follows this convention. It appears eminently sensible tae have all the posts under one thread title, rather than scattered al over the forum...?

As an example, if I walked into a room and saw several people gathered around to view a person's photos, I wouldn't draw the group's attention to look at my own photos. The same holds true for me in cyberspace.

This location is one situation where I see the attraction of B/W. The water is... less than attractive presented in color. I like the last two images of the series.

Yes, having people post other images which may only be loosely connected to the original images can produce a long thread which wanders in many directions.

But some people do specifically ask for other photographer's images to be posted; which makes their intentions clear. Also, some threads will have something like Post Your . . . Images Here in the title.

As long as the original posters thoughts are made clear this usually works well enough but there can always be some misunderstandings. For example is this thread now asking for any photos of the specific Tay Bridge or any bridges? Just a small point but it would have a considerable effect on the number of replies.

perhaps ah erroneously assumed that a thread titled Tay Bridge (2) would be about the Tay Bridge and not bridges intrinsically. But ah do take some of yer point. Obviously, there would be much fewer photos added since there aren't many folk on the forum who live near to this particular bridge.

If there was a thread entitled "Bridges", ah believe that'd be a perfect opportunity for multiple photos comments and opinions, all in one place, rather than 15/20 separate posts on that subject.

Ah was seeking folks opinions on my suggestion re. capturing relevant posts under one thread. Ah was gonna invite others tae post photos of the bridge (as Donald has done). It stimulates more debate and comparison/contrast of photos of the bridge, IMO, but thought ah'd get opinions first.

Well...my preferences are #1 and #2 and the last one, Boab. Very nice composition all. I think you have surveyed and taken as much angles of this bridge as you can and all of them are very nice. My preferences still stands though.

Hi George,

there is a strong incline on the north shore (the curved section). As the railway runs eastwards, underground, for about half a mile through the station and beyond, the bridge had tae be curved, as a straight bridge would have been unfeasible given the area the bridge lands at, coupled with the reduction in height required.

Other considerations were, that what was originally thought tae be bedrock on the North shore,, turned out tae be gravel beds (they still bore the weight as bedrock would, but railway spans had tae be shorter tae compensate. The south side of the bridge was ideal and the major reason for the siting of the bridge. It had tae be so high in the middle as there was a lot of shipping going upriver back then and IIRC around 85-90 feet of clearance was required.

Thanks for the answer. At the pictures it looks as the curve is from coast to coast. I searched for it in maps and I see exactly what you mean.

At over 2 miles long and for nearly 100 years, the longest bridge in the world, ah'm sure the satellites will have found it. But just for you...the curves...

It's the left one, the railroad bridge. The right one is the normal road bridge. A railroad needs a longer radius to make a curve. this is done in the water.
The bridge has an history too. Opened in 1878 and collapsed in 1879. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tay_Rail_Bridge

I like the idea having an open thread based on just one subject. In this thread it would be difficult for me to participate, to far away from me. But an open thread about just bridges would invite more people to participate. Showing , hopefully special, bridges from all over the world and different ways to approach them.
