    Sunset

I used a 10 stop ND filter for this shot. The exposure time is shorter than my last uploaded long exposure shot as the sun was still in the sky when shooting this one. The water was already calm . I'm also hoping to shoot some long exposures if I can find a place with rocks and rough sea to create different effects on the water.

    C&C appreciated

The rocks lead the eyes to the sunset and background. The clouds also add to the sense of movement in the direction of the sun. There is enough detail in the shadows to see what is necessary and the colors add to the soothing nature of the photo.

    Lovely photo, Binnur.

Lovely colours, especially the purple in the sky which is mirrored in the rocks. Your technique has worked well.

Another well done image, Binnur. Everything seems to have come together really well for you.

I like the fact that the water looks like water (and effect of it being relatively still), so in spite of the long exposure, it works. What the long exposure has done for you is pulled and stretched out the clouds.

Did you take any shots of this scene without a long exposure? I wonder how that might have looked. The main reason for my question is that I've seen some images like this where the photographer has smoothed out the water and then blended it with a sharp sky and the results were really stunning looking.

If you've looked at Elia Locardi's word, you can see some examples of this technique.

Nicely captured, you might also consider anything with a reflection, glass or some still life with artificial lighting.

Lovely shot Binnur, this really works well. The composition with the rocks leading right to the back of the image, the light and colour and the clouds all contribute to a very nice image.

Lovely shot Binnur. Have you experimented with some gentle dodging on the foreground rocks? They look great but I wonder if a little extra light would improve an already excellent image.

Not to hijack the thread, but I may be in the minority here in that I like long exposure water (or at least I like the different looks that you can create). Not an issue in this picture of course!

Binnur you have created a gorgeous image! What were your settings for this one?

    Thank you for sharing.

    Re: Sunset

The composition is, in my opinion, excellent. The rocks lead the eye to the sun and the long exposure has allowed the clouds to form an image that drifts out from the sun. My only suggestion would be to lift the shadows to give a little more detail in the dark rocks, but that is a minor point. I would have been pleased to have taken this shot.

    Re: Sunset

Binnur ... the exposure of water is excellent here. And the colours are magnificent. The rocks I think need a little bit of lightening to bring out the textures some more. Excellent composition too. If mine, I will crop a little bit from the bottom where the darkest parts are to make this a more stronger image. Just my opinion...I like the suggestion of Manfred too. I will remember that when I come into a scene like this.

    Re: Sunset

Thanks for all comments and kind words , I'm glad that you have positive opinions about the image

Trev, my settings for the image is '11mm(cropped sensor), f/16, 102 sec, ISO 100' and it was taken with a 10 stop ND filter. Exposure time might differ according to the time of day and I calculated it by using the special calculation method for ND filters. I also allowed some more time for the exposure as ND filters are more dense than how many stops they really are.

John( Shadowman), thanks for the idea. I might shoot still life when I get older as it will be difficult to go out for shooting landscapes So, I will keep your advice in mind

Simon and Dave, I actually tried lifting the shadows in the rocks a bit more when editing but then I stepped back because the reflections and colors showed better this way. I might try lifting only the very dark parts later, but I'm not sure if this would be an improvement as the very dark parts don't seem to be a big issue in the image, thanks for the idea .

Manfred , although the water was calm there were small ripples on the surface of it and long exposure flattened the water and gave a silky and matte look to it. So, the long exposure worked for both the water and clouds. I know what you mean by combining the sharp clouds with silky water and I might try such combinations in the future because I want to concentrate on shooting seascapes and long exposures more. Thanks for sharing the link .I couldn't see the sharp and smooth combinations in that link though .As far as I can see, if the clouds are sharp the water is not silky and if the water is silky the clouds are blurred and smoother . Anyway I know what you mean as I saw some images on the internet with such combinations . Thanks for the idea.(BTW I have some shots in the same place without the ND filter but the compositions might be different.I will look at my files and upload if I can find one for this scene)

Hi Isabel . You commented while I was replying to the other comments. So, I'm replying to you seperately.IMO cropping from the bottom might seem to be a good idea at first sight but the balance between the water and sky in the composition would be lost then. That's why I didn't want to crop . I also like the small transparent water in the FG and I didn't want to lose it. Please see my reply to Simon and Dave about the shadows.

BTW, I'm suprised that you liked this image as you usually don't like milky water. May be it appealed to you because it is in color.Anyway, I'm glad that it is an image to your taste. Thanks for looking and commenting

Very nice Binnur. Those rocks make a great foreground subject.

I wonder what this image would have looked like if the tide were slightly higher and there was more water movement (silkiness) in that centre nearest pool?

Thanks for looking and commenting Grahame This area is a small bay with rocks and there is only small ripples on the water most of the time. I'm hoping to get some shots with more water movement in another area soon though, as I have seen a lot of long exposure images on the internet with more water movement and I like them very much.

Binnur, this is both a beautiful and well executed image. And, the colours are wonderful too.

You certainly won't my C&C... There's nothing I can think of to improve it. Well done.
