Re: One very happy dog
We picked up Nate at the request of the shelter because he was adopted twice previously and bolted from his adopter both times. We are in the process of doing professional training to nip this tendency (sorry about the pun)
We are able to impart some basic training to our rescue dogs on our own but, for specific behavioral problems like Nate's bolting, we rely on a professional trainer. We have some trainers who give us a discounted rate.
Presently, we are working on socializing a seven year-old Maltese female who had been used as a breed bitch in a puppy mill. She had basically no human contact for the first seven years of her life and was not attuned to people (although she gets along quite well with other dogs). We use clicker training for this type of training and it works excellently. Establishing eye contact was our first goal and she has started to do this. It will be a while until we can find an adoptive home for this doh, unless we find a person who is good at dog training and is willing to devote the time and effort.
An example of an adoption to a family dedicated to their dogs is a little Maltese male we adopted to our daughter and son-in-law. Chico had been abandoned in a house when the residents moved out. He had no food or water and was almost dead when rescued by a passerby. Chico had many behavioral problems but with consistence and love, as well as some very good basic training procedures, Chico is now a valued family member who bets along just great.
