Bruce suggested that I make a photo of a spilled glass of wine so long ago (perhaps a couple years ago) that he probably forgot about it. I added a napkin to his idea to make the scene more dramatic.
Setup
The tabletop is glass on top of beige art paper used for two reasons: The paper provided contrast with the background not in the scene but reflected in the glass so it would be apparent if part of the tabletop was not reflecting the background. The paper also provided texture that shows through the glass tabletop. Though no background is included in the scene, the background is white poster board that is 2 feet x 3 feet (about 0.6 meters x 0.9 meters). The entire length and width of the background were needed to ensure that all of the tabletop would be a reflection of the background. The background also added an attractive reflection to the top of the wine glass and to the top left area of the napkin ring that helped define their shape. A medium continuous-light lamp on the left side lights the scene and background material. A medium continuous-light lamp flagged to prevent a direct reflection in the wine glass lights the front right area of the scene. Wine was inserted into the wine glass and onto strategic parts of the tabletop using a turkey baster. The double reflection produced by glass was eliminated during post-processing.
