Triffids? - No, just garlic. DoF demonstration

I will be moving to Cuba toward the end of the year, and I have a few projects going there and will also start a few new ones. They are not particularly related to photography, but I thought I could share my garlic image to show how tilt can be used to extend depth of field, rather than the common usage of minimizing it.

I called the image Triffids-p, as a couple of my garlic cloves seemed to make serious attempts to escape from their confinement. The one in the second cell from bottom to the right actually got up completely from the soil before any sprout was to be seen, so I replanted it. It was the roots that pushed it up, effectively unburying the clove entirely.

Then there was also a second one, which I haven't touched, but its roots (left fifth) are seeking the neighbour trough. It makes me wonder; how would it know that it can find water and nutrients there?

So their obvious attempts at moving around is what made me think of triffids. I thought of placing it in "general discussion", as the DoF issue is such, but put it here, as an example of "all other photography".

i am very much interested in courtyard farming of vegetables in the limited space around and in open terrace. But now it is a dry period, none of them remains, because of my other interests and works related to my teaching jobs. I am really fascinated by this image that brought me nostalgia; how about arranging them in the growth period, say, like one day, three days, one week etc showing the various stages of growth as of a child.....

Would have really stood out if shot from a lower angle; even if shot at f/8. Nice effort.

Considering that left fifth is on the move I'd have seawater ready.

Such images mostly don't stand out a lot. Further tilting brings forth the worse parts of the imaging of the lens, resulting in poorer sharpness, and there is nothing that stands out more than the image looking a bit odd. Here the distance to the closest point is about 25 cm and to the farthest about 130 cm. The lens is a 29 mm Pentacon, stopped down to f/16 to give reasonable vertical DoF on the closest garlic shoots. This also causes rather much diffraction that softens the sharpness somewhat.

Very impressive DOF achieved. If they know how to use the telephone they are even more dangerous than triffids,,,
