Beautiful sunset John - that sun is perfect. Have you had a look at lifting the shadows on the headland and rocks?

I fear that any attempt to increase brightness of the shadows would turn them somewhat 'muddy', in which case I would leave that area as it is now.

Possibly a case for a very slight crop from the bottom and right side, but I'm really sure about it.

Hi John I like the image. I can see some green color cast all over the image , if it is not deliberate I would remove it. Nice composition and I don't think it is necessary to lift the shadows as the silhouette look suits the image. I find the bright white parts on the hills a bit distracting though. I would reduce the brightness of them.

John, this is a really beautiful sunset. Did you use any filters?

It's the quality of this image that would make nearly anyone a sucker for sunsets. The striated cloud pattern and the bottom of the "complete" sun that is tangential with the horizon make this one especially nice.

I must travel to the west coast before I die. Just to see the sun set over the ocean.

    Thanks all for your comments.

Simon, Geoff is right. The headland and rocks were a dead black silhouette and so there has been a fair amount of processing in that area already. I had to stop short of it beginning to look over processed.

Binnur, I can see what you mean but I think it is mainly the sea area. Strangely, no amount of desaturation of the green or cyan channels has any effect what so ever. I've noticed this before in similar shots (back lit small detail) and come to the conclusion that it is a characteristic of the D7100 sensor or perhaps the lens (Nikkor 18-200mm @200mm).

Joe, only the standard UV protection filter.

Mike one of those moments when you see it developing and you think -"Yes"

It's a beautiful image John - no criticism intended in my original comments. Definitely one for the wall in a cocktail bar in Anglesea somewhere!

The green cast is so prominent on my calibrated monitor that I assumed you liked it. It's throughout the entire scene, not just the ocean. I removed it by changing the color cast. However, you may not like the change of mood.

Mike I use a calibrated ASUS Pro Art monitor. The cast is definitely there but I wouldn't say it is prominent. However, I quite like what you have done but I might compensate for the increase in magenta a tad. Presumably you have shifted the colour balance from cyan to red as opposed to my attempt to try and de-saturate the cast?

Very nice image, John. Timing-wise, I like the way you captured the sun just starting to dip below the horizon.

I can agree with that way of describing it. That's because, for me, if a color cast is definitely there, it's also prominent. But words are words and I may not be using them precisely.

My software has a slider for each of the RGB channels. Most of my change was done by shifting the green channel more to the red. I also made a very subtle adjustment of the blue channel more to the blue.

I am a sucker for sunsets too, but more so sunrises -- they have almost the same characteristics, just that sunsets like this one you have here is most beautiful. I love these kinds of colours. Well seen.

What I like the most in this shot* is the band's of colour across the surface of the sun. This particular pattern is like a fingerprint, the exact pattern of which might never be replicated! Did I mention I live this shot?
