    Mill ruins

The wife and I went for a drive yesterday to take in the great weather and sunshine. Below are two pictures of the Picnic Island ruins of a saw mill that was built in 1886. The small island was also home to about 60 people who worked at the mill. It burned down in 1911 which was probably a good thing as the wood supply was pretty much depleted by then leaving the area devoid of trees.

Lookee Dave -- duckees! I prefer the first shot with the duckees -- at least there is bird element. A person inspecting those walls will be a much nicer touch.

    Hi Dave,

I also prefer the one with the Geese in - just like the colours and the extra 'life' in it.

The second (perhaps it is just an alternate crop of same capture?) is lacking the water and the rich blue.

Is that a band of ice next to the shore?

    Cheers, Dave

Thanks Dave, yes there is still ice in many areas where there is wind and current. The second image is not part of the first. I too prefer the first however in the second image I was trying to show the barren landscape around the mill. Unfortunately it's so barren that it adds little to the image.

    Hi Dave,

Yes, I did guess that was your reasoning, but as you say, it seems lacking somehow, despite a bit more colour in the sky, the buildings have lost their 'bite', perhaps some Local Contrast Enhancement (LCE)?

Both are nice images and the first one is especially so, a rare combination of themes
