    Tranquil or Dramatic...?

    Hi folks,

wasn't supposed tae be a Zen moment but good tae see yer all in the zone...

No idea what happened...here's what shouldha been there...

Tranquil or Dramatic...? Ah switch preferences for this photo regularly, never can seem tae make up ma mind which ah prefer. Ah called the colour "Tranquil" and the B+W "Dramatic", as ah feel that's what they convey tae me. Ah lean towards the B+W as the clouds appear tae be more pronounced, jumping out the shot. Others will differ ...your opinions/preference?...

It took a few moments to make up my mind. Usually my first reaction is to prefer one or another almost instantly. The colour version works better and better for me the longer I look at them. Certainly at the smaller size - in lightbox it is almost a dead heat.

It is a very nice letter p. However, I would have go with dramatic. The letter p makes a very harsh, short sound. Maybe try making the letter p sound at golden hour

Possibly another of those tinypics glitches. Originally I couldn't see the images but everything is OK now.

Yes difficult to decide. There are some nice subtle pastel tints in the colour but a good 'clean' conversion with plenty of contrast from bright, but not over exposed, highlights with good shadows.

I was thinking about the monochrome being better but after viewing at full screen size I prefer the bottom left corner area to be in colour.

For once I prefer the mono version, having viewed similar scenes I know how challenging yet exciting it is to be able to maintain the highlights and also the detail.

I also like the mono version because of the whites of the wave froth...

    Re: Tranquil or Dramatic...?

My choice was made while viewing the images in the Lytebox. For me, there is very slightly less detail in the monochrome's mid-tones in the waves and sky. The monochrome version also has the appearance of a sharpening halo on the left half of the horizon. (The lack of it on the right side makes me think that it's actually not a sharpening halo.) So, I slightly prefer the color version overall.

As for being tranquil or dramatic: On a scale of 1 - 10 where 1 is the most tranquil, I would give the color version a 3 and the monochrome a 4. The reason the monochrome is more dramatic for me, though only slightly so and still within the overall realm of being tranquil, has to do with the difference in mid-tones I already mentioned.

Too yellow for me on the colour side so I prefer the mono version...maybe test run other mono colours will be nice.

Both of them are equally good for my taste... I feel half a degree rotation clockwise is needed?

    Re: Tranquil or Dramatic...?

I think I prefer the mono...

But not because it's dramatic or tranquil (full disclosure... I'm quite hydrophobic, so seldom find water either, it's just dangerous and scary)

But the mono is a more timeless look, and I like how it works with the style of the boats in the shot and I also much prefer the froth of the waves in mono.

There's also a lot of negative space (which is no bad thing) and I think that works better with tonality over colour

    YMMV!

My thoughts also particularly since the boats are in silhouette anyway. Not that I dislike either. If I had been asked to view them independently of one another, I would have had good things to say about both but if I'm comparing the two together, it's the mono.
